Can I get into College?

Hello. I am a rising senior who lives in Virginia. I'm definitely going to be applying to UVa, William and Mary, and George Mason University as a safety. I'm thinking about applying to Duke but that's only if I can get my scores up. Here are my stats:

UVa is my #1 choice of school. So, at the school I go to now, the average GPA of an accepted student from 2008-2010 to UVa is a 4.25, the average SAT score is an 1880, and the average ACT score is a 27. We have this cool thing called family connection, and it shows us the admissions rates from the past 3 years. This past year from the class of 2010, 8 were admitted and 23 applied (in 2009 16 were admitted and 30 applied). I KNOW my SAT is not up to par. That was from my May one, I did a little studying but my family can't really afford to give me prep classes and stuff. I'm really hoping to increase about 200 points or so to get my score to an 1850 at the least. I took a practice ACT yesterday and scored a 29 though.

I think you should take the ACT over the SAT since you did better on it on the practice test.
If you can get 30+, I’ll think you have a good at UVA and William and Mary. I think Duke would be a low reach.

I would strongly encourage applying to some stronger schools. Your stats, which are great, combined with your URM status will get you far. Good luck.

davidoga, if I can get my SAT score up, I was thinking of applying to Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, or Penn.

bad SAT. does ur school have severe grade inflation?

OK, seriously? That was a really rude question…I work my ass off in school and just because my SAT score is low says nothing about my work ethic.

i agree with delmonico. hes not being rude its just that you need to understand that 3 of those four schools are not possible with a 1680/2400. granted youre grades are excellent but you should probably look more into lesser schools

what is your rank?

^ Yea, standardized testing just makes it even for everyone since schools teach differently, some harder and some easier. All I can say is just study harder for the SAT or ACT and you can definitely make it. Good luck

Have you looked at Bowdoin, Sarah Lawrence, or any other test optional schools? If not, invest in SAT/ACT prep courses. It’ll pay off in the end. Besides your low test scores, everything is solid! :]

I don’t really consider delmonico’s question to be rude-- just a tad rough. If your work ethic is as good as you claim it to be, why don’t you apply that same mentality you have toward your school work to the SAT? Although the misconception exists that the SAT is some sort of innate aptitude test (a la IQ), it can be quite easily studied.

Edit: I didn’t see that you took the SAT cold the first time. The idea remains, however. If you can prove to these prestigious schools that your URM status shouldn’t place your standardized test scores on a different standard, you have a fairly good shot at UVa (especially because of in-state residence).

seniorxcbro, who says I don’t have a chance at UVa or Wiliam & Mary? I’ve known people who have gotten into UVa with 1550’s and lower scores than mine, and no they were not athletes. I think if I can pull off at least an 1800 I should be good for those schools I don’t know why everyone on here makes it seem like if you don’t get a 30+ ACT or a 2000+ SAT, then you’re not going to get into college, because in REALITY, its a lot more than just test scores.

It’s irritating to see students ask for their chances and then get defensive if they don’t hear what they want. Sure, it wouldn’t be IMPOSSIBLE for you to get in with your current stats, but in REALITY…you wont.

You don’t much of a chance at these schools.

Don’t apply to Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, or Penn.

You have a chance at UVA and W&M.

You will get into George Mason.

I think that you have a chance of getting into all those colleges but a slim one at Duke, this is mainly because of your SAT score, what you should do is try to retake the SAT, but if you don’t retake the SAT i think you have very slim chances with a 1680. Please respond to mine.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/983554-chances-osu-case-toledo-william-mary.html

It seems as though you already know your chances as seen by your defensive responses… Anyway I agree with the general consensus that with those sat scores the schools you listed will be a challenge besides g mason. Applying to the ivies would be pointless unless money isn’t an issue though you already said it was so focus on some more realistic schools and improving sats

ibfearless you need to understand that a 1680 total is not good enough for uva. maybe if that person won a nobel prize it was enough but a 1680 simply doesnt cut it

I don’t see why you all are jumping on my ass about not getting into anywhere. I WILL retake the SAT! It’s not like I sent my 1680 score to anywhere, jeez. I’m going to take it again and am hoping for a way better score :/

then dont ask for our advice if that is how youre gonna respond
