Can I get into Emory University and University of Michigan?

I hate to ask redundant questions, but I'll start with the usual:

UW GPA: 3.97 W GPA: 4.45
Class rank: our school does not rank
ACT: 28

AP classes: biology, government, macroeconomics, calculus, english, french, European history

Extracurricular activities (with a liberal arts focus):
- Marching, concert, and jazz bands: lead trumpet, multiple awards, 4 years
- Editor of the school newspaper- 4 years
- President of Israeli Culture/political awareness club- 4 years
- National Honor Society
- Varsity baseball, 4 years

Two things I did to get different perspectives:
- a year of being an overnight camp counselor, critical for communication skills.
- a summer internship at Cleveland Clinic as a student radiology intern

Additionally, shining essays focusing on the struggles I face living without my mother, living with my stuttering problem, and additional completion of the supplements for both schools.

Am I a good candidate? If not, PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT ELSE I CAN DO. Thanks!

Are you OOS? If so, both of them are reaches. While everything else is good, your 28 ACT is a killer. At most schools, kids with 4.45s are getting 32+ on their ACTs, which makes your school like weak in comparison. Your ECs look good enough for both schools, but they don’t set you apart from the competition to make up for where you are lacking in other places. If you’re a junior try taking the ACT again, or try the SAT instead.

Okay. What can I do to make my application stand out from everyone else?

Get better test scores…

Your ECs seem very good, but they won’t make up for bad test scores! You’d need regional/national recognition (or something similar in prestige) to make up for your weaknesses.

Take a look at these:

[Emory University Profile - SAT Scores and Admissions Data for Emory University](Emory University: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA) - ACT 25th % is 30

[University of Michigan Profile - SAT Scores and Admissions Data for the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor](University of Michigan: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA) - ACT 25th % is 27 - but it is much harder for OOS applicants. Of the 20 people who applied to UMich from my school with a 28 or below ACT in the past 4 years, 4 have gotten in, and I go to a very competitive OOS high school. Meanwhile, of the 32 people who applied with a 30+ ACT in the past 4 years, 24 have gotten in. It is clear that test scores make a difference.

I’d say Michigan is a match. Michigan weights GPA much more heavily than test scores.

I can’t refute that with facts, but take a look at my post above. Granted, this is only the data from my school, but I do believe it has some value to it.
