Can I get into SUNY Cortland, SUNY New Paltz, and/ or The University of Scranton?

I go to a catholic college prep school and have a 85.68 gpa (freshmen-junior year). I’m a senior and I have taken and will be taking: 4 years of English, 4 years of science, 3 1/2 years of math, 4 years of history, 3 years of Spanish, 4 years of religion. The classses I’m taking this year (senior year) are psychology, public speaking, criminal justice, personal finance, government, creative writing, forensic science and a religion type class. So far I have a 1050 sat out of 1600 (500 math, 550 English) but I’m retaking the test and a 20 act( not retaking and might not submit).
(I live in New York State)

New Paltz would be a reach but Cortland might be achievable. Have you gone to suny.edu and checked the stats for each school and compared your numbers? I don’t know anything about University of Scranton but almost nothing can beat a SUNY tuition for an instate student.

The SUNY site will let you search by prospective majors, location, even the sports you’re interested in.

Thank you! Cortland is my top choice so I’ll defiantly search the website and compare my scores. I’m also applying early action so maybe that will help

You’d average in Scranton’s entering class but they give solid financial aid. Also, you should check out duquesne, They’re catholic and it might be a reach for you but they also give solid aid. Plus they both have great campuses

Duquesne is actually easier to get into than UScranton, and their financial aid less good (merit aid is similarly good).

In addition, UScranton is test-optional, so I’d advise @nicolem104 to apply without test scores, using course rigor and excellent essays. Apply to other test-optional colleges: St Michael’s, Temple, DePaul, Gustavus Adolphus, Goucher, Elizabethtown, Susquehanna, Washington&Jefferson, Ithaca, Marist - for reaches: Earlham, Kalamazoo, Beloit.

SUNY Cortland is a low match, SUNY New Paltz a high match.
Retaking the test and scoring better would help you a lot with SUNY’s.

Definitely look at your SAT test booklet and see where you made the most mistakes. Then do a few practice tests from the collegeboard site.

If you can get the SAT up to 1100 or 1200 that would help.

Some other schools you could look at are St Vincent College, Geneva College, St Francis University, Lycoming College, Gannon University.

See what the net price calculator says, some offer merit and need based aid.

Thank you for all the advice!! I’m retaking the sat and I’ve been getting tutored so hopefully I get a 1100 or higher. I loved Cortland and would love to go there so hopefully that works out, but I’ll definitely look into the other test optional schools. The only thing is since I dont qualify for financial aid, it’s harder to find a school that is a reasonable price like the Sunys

Have you run NPC’s on public AND private universities?
Temple does offer merit if you apply through the Temple Option (merit is based on grades, curriculum rigor, and essays). Other universities also do, but indeed it’ll be hard to bring costs to SUNY level if your family would be full pay (200K+ income).

I haven’t but I will and I’m going to look into temple a little more and yait is hard to get a school to match the price of a SUNY.
