Do I have a chance at Fordham, RPI, or NYU? What are some good schools worth applying to for a Physics or Chemistry major?
University of Scranton and Muhlenberg are good additions.
@TurnerT do I have a chance at any of the schools I named?
Good shot at Fordham
Fordham you are low in the middle 50%, so below average. The others no.
I personally think Muhlenberg and Scranton are better for sciences and the campuses are nicer.
If you haven’t been to Scranton, you should visit. I wouldnt be the only parent that was extremely impressed with that school. Science facilities, housing, food all top of the line. Muhlenberg is also extremely nice too.
-NYU is a reach.
-Fordham is a low match.
-RPI is a reach.
I can tell you’d prefer a urban campus. I can recommend some more safeties & reaches, if you answer these questions:
-What can your family afford?
-Where do you want to attend college? NY, or any other states?
@newjerseygirl98
Money is not really a worry and I would prefer any Northeastern/Mid-Atlantic state
@TurnerT I’ll take those schools into consideration, do you have any other suggestions?
St. Lawrence, Loyola Maryland, Union College might be Ok. They are test optional.
Where do you live?
@TurnerT I live in NY. Are there any schools that you would suggest that aren’t test optional, but okay with my test scores? Do you suggests a liberal arts school?
Your test scores are good at 1850 but sort of put you between schools so it makes it tricky. For example you are high in the middle 50% for Scranton. You will get in for sure but not so outstanding there. Same for Muhlenberg.
I tend to like smaller schools. Scranton and Muhlenberg come to mind for sciences and the two are really excellent in all regards.
@TurnerT okay, thank you so much! I appreciate the help! Are my scores good enough for any of the other schools you named?
Yes I believe so. I really am not comfortable with the concept of “reach” schools so they are ones where you chance of admittance is 50% or higher and also where you may get some scholarship money.
You should visit at least Muhlenberg and Scranton. You could do that same day. The Scranton tour is one of the better tours I have been on. It’s been some years since I have been to Loyola but its a great school. Really excellent actually.
Muhlenberg’s science facility is new as is Scranton’s.
Where exactly are you in NY?
Have you checked if any of the SUNY’s have good physics programs?
SUNY Albany, Buffalo?
@TurnerT I’m a little bit upstate, about an hour and a half north of Manhattan. Is Union College on the “reach-ier” side?
@mommdc I like Stony Brook and Buffalo, but Buffalo’s location isn’t really something I’d enjoy.
Yes St. Lawrence and Union are a bit reachier but solid tries for you.
You should be close to both Scranton and Union I’f you are 90 minutes from the city. St. Lawrence isn’t too far either.
Allegheny College has similar acceptance rate and SATscore ranges to U Scranton. You could also add Penn State.
I would visit all the schools that you are accepted at and look further into each physics and chemistry program. Also check into research opportunities.
Are you taking Calc in high school now? Your math score seems a little low for a science major.
I’ve found some urban & suburban schools for you. I’ve put an asterisk next to the schools that are located in large cities.
