I am ranked 7th in my class of about 350 people. I am taking the most honors courses in my grade, and my GPA is about a 3.2 (I know, not the most ideal GPA, but I am working on it). I have yet to take the SATs because I am only in 10th grade, though I plan on doing very, very well. I am really involved with the violin. I have made all-state two years in a row (I am a sophomore), and I am involved in several different ensembles and orchestras. I am working on finding an internship involving biochemisty, as well as becoming more involved in school and community service. I am on all of the usual school clubs (math team, key club, Tri-M, etc.), and I do a lot of volunteer work at my church, however, I know competitive schools look for something unique, and I hope that my music will shine through, I think it is the thing that makes me unique and different than all of the other applicants.

These are the schools I want to go to:
1.Brown University 2.Cornell University 3.Dartmouth College 4.Georgetown University 5.Tufts University 6.George Washington University 7.Northeastern University 8.Boston University

I want to major in Biochemistry, however, at the tougher schools (Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth and Georgetown) I am going to put my major as music because I have a better chance of getting in. Then second semester, I can change my major to Biochemistry.

I am going to apply ED to Brown.

I know my GPA is low, but I have had issues at home that have showed in my studies. Last year my lowest GPA was a 3.58. Please let me know of my chances and if I ruined my chances at getting into these schools. Also, any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

way to early to tell. If u explain ur situation or even right an essay about it they may give you a little better chance, but it unfortnately will never erase it. Many kids have bad home lives and manage to be great students. in ur 6-8 schools u can def get in. Ur internship shud get u Tufts. 1-3 are unpredictable, but not a bad shot if u can get a 2100+ and boost the avg despite the home stuff. Take some SAT II's and do well. Good essays that r thought out. Also get some leadership. GTown is also really competitive so its unpredicatable also. I cud see u doing it if u work and boost everything to show that u capable of improving despite adversity, colleges love that : ).

don't put down music as a major.... that would be ****ing stupid.

and don't we all plan to do very very well on the SATs?

it's WAY too early to tell your chances, so just do well in hs for the time being.

good luck =)

Top schools will be looking for awards that you won for music if you apply as a music major.

Also, as already stated, until you know your true SAT/ACT/SATII scores, it is going to be difficult to actually judge your chances.

Lastly, while ranking 7th in a school of 350 is impressive (top 2%), it won't be looked at that way if you do this by getting a 3.2 UW GPA, but then add in a extra 1 point because it is an honor/AP/IB course. The top schools will want you to get As in these courses--and you have to also realize that starting in your junior and senior years, everybody will be taking the honors/AP/IB courses--so then you will have to get the A or else you will not be able to maintain your rank (7 out of 350) and will fall way back quickly.

Good luck--and write back once you complete your next semester, and/or have a good estimate of how you will do on the SAT tests based upon the practice tests you took (under timed conditions, so they will reflect reality).
