Can I get into UCI from a CC in this situation ?

If anyone could lend their opinion I would really appreciate it, I am applying to UCI this Fall 15 semester from a local CC. I am an older returning student in recovery from alcoholism, but as a result of that life I had a lot of bad grades from my early 20s. I got academic renewal on as much as I could, and have gotten all As in school since my return a year ago. So it comes out to 9 classes with As over that time. I’m a psychology major, I intend to work with alcoholics and addicts to provide therapy and support in the future and this is the path I must take to see that through. As for extra things I do, I am very active in my program and do a lot of volunteer work in that, but also in working with homeless. I joined the PTK honor society and the local Psi Beta honors in psychology club, it’s the CC version of Psi Chi, I am treasurer right now. So that is where I stand at this point, now here are the numbers … not so great but it’s the best I can do.

Fall 15 Application Deadline GPA 3.13

Any psych and social behavior majors from UCI here that have any advice or comments about the program, I would especially love to hear from you. I also just want to hear from anyone, I need some feedback. Thank you !!!

I was in a similar situation as you, and to be honest, I believe my GPA may have been lower than yours, but I got in nonetheless (as well as UCSD)! I believe the strongest parts of my application were of course, my personal essays. What I suggest you do is not approach your application with the mindset of “being a great student a UC would consider” but rather “all the UCs would regret it if they didn’t take you in as a student.” Show that you’re more than a number (GPA), but what you’ll bring to a UC and how passionate you are.

I’m not a Psych major at UCI, but I’ve heard great things about it from friends who are. I’m sure you can get in man, you sound like you’ve really picked it up. Good luck!
