Can I get into UCI with these stats?

Ok I am an incoming high school junior and my sophomore year I had a 3.89 UW GPA, 4.00 W GPA. For my junior year, I am supposed to be taking 5 AP classes:

AP Calc BC

Ap Chemistry

AP Computer Science

AP Language and composition (?)

AP US History (?)

If I get all A’s on all 5 Ap classes, I will get a 4.8 GPA for the year and end up with a 4.4 overall GPA when i apply to UCI. The problem is, I am absolutely horrible at writing and history. If I took normal english and history instead (recieving straight A’s), I would end up with a 4.5 gpa for the year and a 4.25 wieghted gpa when I apply to uci. CAN i get into this school with just a 4.25 or should i attempt the two APs?

I am applying comp sci major. SAT:1500
EC: programmed my own app to help people with mental disabilities, 100 volunteer hours at local library.

If you keep doing what you are doing, you stand a good chance at UCI.

Your UC GPA capped weighted is based on 10-11th grades only with a cap on 8 semesters of UC approved Honors, AP/IB or DE credit. Since you are a rising Junior, you cannot gauge your chances just based on 1 years worth of grades.

Here is the UC GPA calculator: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

This is 2017 data since 2018 data is not available for CS:

Average UC Capped weighted: 4.11
Average SAT: 1402

UCI’s acceptance rate dropped significantly for 2018, so it should be considered a tough admit but you are on the right track. Make sure you select 2 safety schools and apply widely. Best of luck.

do they only care about capped gpa? or uncapped as well?
if my math class on junior year is split into 2 semesters, does that count as 2 Or 1 of the 8 semesters? Its the same math class but we switch classmates.

UCI only refers to capped weighted when it comes to their statistical data but if they consider uncapped UC GPA, it is not listed anywhere on their application review criteria. I would use the capped weighted UC GPA to gauge your chances.
2 semesters of Math= 2 semesters = 1 year long class

UCLA/UCB do cite statistical data for the capped weighted and uncapped weighted but none of the other UC’s list their uncapped UC GPA data.

someone on reddit said that uci considers uncapped gpa just for eligibility, and they look at all the gpas. i dont know who to believe omg,

If UCI uses the uncapped fully weighted UC GPA, then it is not stated anywhere available to non-admission individuals. Like I said, if you look at the UCLA/UCB Freshman profiles they do state Fully weighted UC GPA stats for their in-coming class.

The more HS rigor you show with good grades, the more competitive you will be so take the AP’s you think you will do well in.

UCI application review:

  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Extracurricular activities, Level of applicant’s interest, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores, Talent/ability, Volunteer work, Work experience
  • Important: Character/personal qualities, Class rank

  • Considered: First generation college student, Geographical residence, State residency

  • Note: Demonstrated record of academic preparation, educational engagement, talent and skills important.

  • Freshman Selection:
UCI admits into the University first and then into the major. In the case that UCI is unable to accommodate all qualified applicants in their first-choice major, those students who indicate a valid alternate major may be offered admission in that major or Undeclared.

Eligibility for any UC campus will be based on the completion of all a-g course requirements (9-12th grades) and if you meet the minimum UC GPA of 3.0 for in-state and 3.4 for OOS which is based off the capped weighted UC GPA.

Edited: In order to be meet the minimum requirements for freshman admission consideration, the student must have successfully completed 11 or more of UC’s “a-g” subject requirements with grades of C or higher prior to the beginning of 12th grade/last year of secondary school.
