So I am a junior in high school and I just want to know if UF is a realistic goal to have. I am in IB and I play on varsity soccer.
Classes and grade for this year:
- IB Pre Calculus ------ 1st quarter: C 2nd quarter: B
- IB Psychology HL------ 1st quarter: A 2nd quarter: A
- IB English III ------ 1st quarter: B 2nd quarter: A
- IB Biology SL ----- 1st quarter: B 2nd quarter: C
- TOK ------- 1st quarter: A 2nd quarter: A
- IB History of the Americas ------- 1st quarter: A 2nd quarter: A
- IB Latin IV -------- 1st quarter: A 2nd quarter: A
my unweighted GPA for quarter 1 was: 3.4286
my unweighted GPA for quarter 2 was: 3.5714
my overall unweighted GPA is: 3.7750
my overall weighted GPA is: 4.9750
- Im mostly concerned because I never got C’s until this year and so I’m freaking out about those.
I honestly don’t have a lot of extracurriculars but I do volunteer a lot, I just don’t have some of the volunteer forms signed by my guidence counsler:
Extracurriculars:
- Varisty Soccer
- NHS
- German Club
Volunteer:
- Volunteer at math and drama camps at my old school every summer for the past 3 years for about 1 - 2 weeks, 4 hours a day
- Go to an elementary school every friday and volunteer at the extended day care
- last summer I went to Taiwan and volunteered at this church in a remote area for about 7 hours the 4 days I volunteered
lmk if you need my 10th grade classes and grades. but like i said, my main problem is the C’s. I never got C’s until this year becasue I took Algebra II last year, while everyone else already took honor precalc so I struggled in that 1st quarter, and then bio is not my subject. Also, if it’s anything, I want to major in international buisness when I go to college and I speak Mandarin, German, and English. Please lmk if UF is realistic or not!
Your grades seem alittle inconsistent, as they jump back and forth alot. Your unweighted average is also a little low for UF. Try to join loads of clubs, and assume leadership positions. I think the reason I got into UF was my high gpa and extensive extracurriculars, and leadership positions. It isnt just enough to have strong grades for UF, they really look for more than that. Personally, I had – in my opinion a low ACT score-- yet my grades, EC, essay, and Resume gave me an edge. UF loves IB, and you are taking a good amount of them. What are your standardized testing scores? Also are you in-state or OOS? If you have any other questions you can lmk, as I am recently admitted to UF!! good luck. You seem like an average applicant in my perspective.
You’re struggling a bit, but that’s standard in an IB program in your junior year, don’t let that get you down.
Your overall unweighted GPA is still 3.7750, which, when paired with the rigor of IB program is still good.
Keep up on your ECs, over the summer. It’s your last chance to build up your ECs. Volunteering is great (UF values it a lot), as well as work, etc.
Good Luck!
What exactly is the “C” in and was that for a semester? Is it an elective? Also, can’t echo enough to volunteer and to be consistent with your volunteering (many hours at the same place). You also must have a creative essay that preferably shows you have overcome an obstacle (even if that isn’t the prompt - work it in). Schools want to know you can handle the rigor and you can stick it out. Make sure that essay is creative and stands out - great opening and closing. Tell a story. Your Senior Year - keep up the rigor with your classes. Lastly, UF leaves a last space to tell them anything about yourself. You could address the “C” if it goes on your SSAR - were you going through a family issue, etc? Or did you learn from it? But also use that space to make sure you have conveyed you have a “passion” and to bolster where you think you may not has been as strong in the answers. Ex: My son didn’t hold a lot of leadership positions, but he was deeply involved in theatre with lead roles and discussed how that was tied to leadership, yada yada yada. Just trying to give you all angles. PS: get tutoring in those classes giving you problems.
My son had a C in APUSH first semester. Then a B second semester. He actually got Bs in every social studies class throughout high school for at least one of the two semesters. They were all AP courses. Everything else that mattered was As. He also had Bs in a couple of electives like Journalism and AP Capstone. Overall he had a 3.78 unweighted and a 4.3 UF weighted. SAT score was 1440. His ECs were not outstanding. He was in Orchestra all 4 years and played JV football as a freshman and sophomore. He worked part time for his junior and senior years. He explained that he was unable to do other ECs due to working and helping tutor and providing transportation for his younger siblings to their activities while we worked late (The admissions reps at the July open house told the group to state things like how you help your family on your application. They said holds a lot of weight with them). His essay was also very strong. He got in for Fall 2018.
So your grades are pretty close to his. Get a good SAT/ACT, think outside the box when stating your ECs, and write a strong essay. You’d have a good shot at getting in.
My son 4.78 unweighted and 4.21 UF Weighted (only core classes count). He, too, had almost straight Bs in social studies classes for many of the years. SAT 1370 - He got in for Fall 2018 (see prior reply on things to keep in mind)
sorry! I though I put my SAT on there. My SAT is terrible, but I’ve only taken it once. I took it in December and got a 1200, but I will be taking it again on Wednesday and again in May and June. I also took the ACT and got a 24, but I really hated the ACT and I won’t be taking it again. Thanks for all the help though!
