Can I get into UT Austin out of state?

I know out of state is much more difficult for Texas, but it is one of my dream schools and my family is moving to Houston after I graduate high school to be closer to my father’s business (we did not move earlier because my parents did not want me to be in a new high school after being comfortable at my own in va). I did briefly mention how my family is planning to move there when i graduate high school in an essay, although I am not sure if this helps.

I was wondering what my chances were and how the admissions process works for oos
(applied 1st choice mccombs and 2nd choice engineering- competitive, I know, but I can’t see myself majoring in anything else and do not want to apply to an easy major just to get into UT)

I have 3 recommendations (employer, math, and science teacher) and I think my essays are pretty good, I had them read by others. For McCombs I know I do not seem to have a lot of business courses, but my school does not offer any strong ecs for the field, so in my essays I explained where and how I found and expanded my passion for business. I hope that helps a little bit. If not, hopefully engineering.

Sorry, this is a lot of information, but I’d love for some honesty. I am already aware of the competitiveness of out of state for UT, and I’d love to hear from anyone who was out of state and got accepted before. Don’t worry, I did make sure to apply to safeties and target schools I like in my own state!

Thanks!

Did you get in?

If you did i’ll be in your class!

not sure yet! I think I will be getting my results in January or February

I’m from San Antonio and just got into architecture a few days ago. I would say that if you had a little higher of test scores (33/1480), then you would have a pretty good shot. But UT was at our high school a few days ago and someone asked how hard it was to get into business/engineering they’re from out of state and they said you need “likely no lower than a 32 for mccombs or cockrell”. So, based on that logic, it’ll be pretty tough. But who knows. The other problem is that UT wants to see tons of passion towards your desired field in your essays, and seeing as you’re out of state, you’ll be put up against some of the best and most passionate kids from across the country. It’ll be tough, but maybe you can make it. Also, it does actually help to apply before 11/1, because that way not only do you get your answer before 2/1, but you also have a higher chance because they’ll have more spots available.

Note that far less than 10% enrolled students are from OOS.
