Note: This is a high school sports ** club **, not a sports team.
I’m interested in bringing a certain sport to my city and the area (field hockey) by implementing a field hockey club at my high school. Field hockey has never been played by anyone in my city, and there are no competitive field hockey teams in the area, so this will be an entirely new sport. I’ve always really liked field hockey and I’ve done a lot of looking about how the game works, techniques, drills, equipment, etc., so I hope this prior knowledge would be beneficial when starting/leading the club.
My question is, how difficult would it be to start a sports club with no experience at high school? Since no one would have any experience with the sport either, I’d estimate that the first 1-2 years would be mainly just familiarizing the club members with the sport before we actually enter into competitions. I’m also planning on suggesting the idea to the other high schools in the area so that the clubs would be able to compete with one another. I believe this happened with another sport (lacrosse) a couple years back: Five years ago, there was no lacrosse in the area at all, but all the high schools implemented lacrosse clubs and regularly compete with each other in the area and in the major cities, so I know that introducing an entirely new sport is possible and has been done before. My high school has the right field for it, so finding a place to practice won’t be a problem. I suppose my main qualm is how the leadership would work, since I don’t have personal hands-on experience with field hockey. What would you all recommend for introducing the other members to the sport? Instructional videos? Drill and field work? I will admit, it does seem a little silly to spend the first few days of practice sitting in front of a Smartboard watching Youtube instructional videos of field hockey tips and techniques, but I’d like some feedback on how effective this would be before actually implementing it. I would definitely try to see if I can obtain some field hockey equipment so I can practice over the summer. I have a lot of big plans for the club and I think many would be interested to join.
My second question is: for those of you who play field hockey either at your school or on a team, would you mind sharing what your practices usually include, how do you practice year-round, and the length of your practices?
Sorry for the incredibly long message and for the scrambled thoughts! Please comment if you would like more clarification or additional details from me.
