Can I increase my financial aid?

I am aware that students may appeal for more financial aid after their freshman year, though the amount never surpasses $1-4k even in extreme cases.

I've always wanted to go to NYU, I was so incredibly honored and shocked to have been admitted, and in the weeks following, i didnt realize exactly how much money 50-57k A YEAR was. that's over 200k in loans. I have a twin sister going to Cornell for 30k a year at the same time that I would go to NYU, and an older brother who is in 100k+ of student loan debt and still in college. Even if I worked my butt off for the four years at NYU, I could hardly make a dent, and the only way my parents could possibly help me enough to bring my debt down to a manageable amount (and by "manageable", I mean like 80-90k) would be to sell the house and compromise their retirements.... and they already work insane overtime.

I want to go to NYU so badly, but the price is just insane for someone like me, with sibling and parents with nothing to spare. If I go to the financial aid office and cry for them or send them a sad email, could they take pity on me and send a little more my way? I'm a little desperate here, as a theater major whose only other choice is a state school with an absolutely mediocre theater dept. and absolutely minimal reputation as an academic institution.

No normal person could pay back 200-250k in debt… it’s just impossible for a new college grad to even attempt to do so. I’d have repo guys taking away my cardboard box on the sidewalk.

Anything over 30,000 (total over all four years) isn’t recommended. Even if you appealed NYU and they gave you more aid, it wouldn’t be a meaningful amount.

NYU is too expensive for you and would put you in unreasonable debt, there’s no point in even trying. Go to your state school and go to NYU for graduate studies if you really want to.

NYU is known for having bad financial aid. I’m sorry to say this but the debt isn’t worth it. You parents shouldn’t have to go to extreme circumstances (“sell the house and compromise their retirements”) for you to get an education. Crying and/or sending a sad email will not make the school have pity on you. Did you apply to any other colleges?
