I was accepted into NYU Stern RD and received a Stern scholarship of $43k a year. My family also qualifies for financial aid, but the aid we got was not enough and we would still have to pay $29k a year, plus loans and all so I’d probably be about $100k+ in debt by the time I graduate. I know $29k doesn’t sound too bad to some people but in my family we only have one person employed and my older sibling is also currently in medical school. NYU did take this into account when giving us our packages, but the final cost still is beyond our affordability.
I really want to go to Stern, so is there any way that we could possibly negotiate for more financial aid or is this, unfortunately, the final decision?
Do you have a basis for appeal? Meaning has your family’s financial situation changed? Do you have a better offer from a peer school? If either of those, go ahead and present your case, the worst that can happen is they say no.
NYU is not a particularly generous school wrt FA…did you run the NPC before applying? How does your offer compare to that?
Right now NYU does not sound affordable for you. Do you have any affordable options?
I have heard of some “successful” appeals, but none that got more than a few thousand dollars more. Unfortunately for most students NYU will not meet full need.
$100,000 is far too much debt for a bachelors degree. You’re also not in a position to negotiate. NYU is clearly NOT an affordable option. $100,000 is not a reasonable amount of debt for a bachelors and you would be financially crippled for many years to come. Unless the degree says M.D. next to it, you shouldn’t be co-signing that kind of debt. If I were you, I would scratch them off the list and go somewhere more affordable.
