Can I jump in AP Chem or should I take regular Chem first?

So I've asked a lot of people in my school, but I haven't been able to get a clear answer as to if I'm able to go straight into AP Chem or if I need to take reg. chem first. Technically there's no prerequisite of taking regular chem before going into AP Chem on the info sheet, but my friends that are taking regular chem right now says that the regular class is pretty challenging, especially due to the particular teacher so they say I should take that class first since AP will even be harder. But since they haven't taken AP Chem yet, they don't have any experience of that class. Those who are taking or took AP Chem say that it's possible to go straight into AP Chem, and some teachers recommend taking regular first.
The reason I don't know which is best is because yes, regular chem is a good stepping stone to go in AP Chem and such, but me being a junior next year, taking regular Chem may not look as 'impressive' to colleges. So what should I do?

I would take honors Chemistry first. But that is me. Hopefully you can get more opinions.

AP Chemistry sort of lies on the assumption that you have had previous exposure to Chemistry. Chemistry is more math based so I would take honors before you decide you hate it. I got into Chem thinking that it was just Chemical Changes and Physical Changes but it got very detailed and the math takes a few practices to learn correctly

@samuraiman26 I don’t think there’s an Honors chem class offered at my school, or else I would have taken it. I think the only chem class is either regular, or AP and that’s it.

Ah I see. I would take Chem then. Then AP Chem. At most schools Chem I is a prereq to even do AP Chemistry. Trust me if you never taken HS chemistry before, I would before you learn that you hate Chemistry and do an AP version of it without knowing.

But your school might be different.

On the AP class sign up sheet, there’s no prerequisite of taking regular chem first, but that’s what a lot of people have advised me to do too. But the only thing is, will a reg chem class as a junior on schedule be less competitive to colleges?

@samuraiman26 I saw your reply on the Rate thread too, and that’s what my teachers said {i need all 3 scienes}, that’s why chem is a priority to take. But I just don’t know which chem to take and when.

@thealvintran , take Chemistry first. Trust me on that one!!! Your life will be much easier. You need at least one semester of stoichiometry before jumping into AP Chem.

No that won’t be seen as bad. In many schools Chemistry is taken at the 11th grade level. Just depend on the state. Like we both have mentioned colleges like seeing you spent one year on Bio, Chem and Physics, then you do whatever you want or take multiple AP sciences.

Stoichiometry is a pain… way too much guess and check. And underlying concepts are important to know

Take Chem first. As an AP Chem student currently, I can say that taking the basics of chemistry is essential to doing well in AP Chem.

TAKE HONORS FIRST. I wouldn’t have been able to do AP within regular.

Honors or regular should work- at least at my school, there isn’t much difference between them. Our AP book has the first 3 or so chapters on review from regular chem, so everyone is usually at the same level by the time we start the new AP stuff. I wouldn’t recommend jumping right into AP though.

hey this is a little late, but I hope I can help. I think it depends on your specific class. In my school AP Chem is a sophomore class and they assume you have no experience, so everyone starts from the beginning (and we all get 4/5s!) If your school tends to have 2nd year students then definitely regular first!
