Hey guys
I think Tufts is a great school and it actually fits me well. However, there is a problem, Tufts does not offer stats major! The thing is, if I major in applied math, can I still get the chance to learn statistics? Does tufts at least offer some stats classes?
I really want to apply for tufts, but i dont know if i should to really go to a school where I cannot get the major I am looking for.
I think undergrad stats majors are relatively rare, especially at smaller schools.
Here is a list of the regularly offered courses at Tufts: http://math.tufts.edu/courses/courses.htm
I enjoyed the Math 161/162 sequence (Probability in the fall, Stats in the spring). There may be a few courses in other departments that are relevant but there isn’t a huge amount of purely statistics. An applied math major would definitely prepare you well to go on to an MS in stats elsewhere, too.
@swardon I would say that there is a reasonably high probability that you could learn statistics at Tufts
Electrical Engineering has a couple of sub fields that depend heavily on statistics (communications and feedback/control).
Computer Science has the hot sub field of machine learning (but you need to take a number of courses to get to that specialization)
Engineering and Computer Science applications are going to tend to drag in systems modeling as well (which is probably a good thing)
Environmental Studies and Child Development also have some high level courses that cover multivariate analysis.
Since probability is a research area in the math department, you could also do an independent study project in that area as well. (you could also email one of the professors in this area)

Here are some related courses I found:
MATH 161 Probability
MATH 162 Statistics
EE 23 Linear Systems
EE104 Probabilistic System Analysis
ES 152 Stochastic Models
EE 140 Stochastic Processes
ENV 202 Environmental Statistics
CD 249 Applied Multivariate Analysis
ENP181 Fuzzy Sets and Genetic Algorithms
COMP 132 Decision Theory and AI
COMP 136 Statistical Pattern Recognition
Here are the course descriptions
An applied math major is good substitute for someone interested in Statistics.
I know one student who was choosing between Rice and Tufts, and ended up at Rice because they had a stats major.
What would you like to do after college graduation? Graduate school, or is there a specific career you have in mind?
I will definitely go to graduate school. I want to get into a business field when I start working. (Since I have a decent math solving ability, I think statistician or accountant will be my dream job)
Thanks for all of you guys’ comment!!! I appreciate all of them!!!
