As of right now, I'm a senior in high school and I'm not sure what I want to do. Many of the colleges I'm applying to require me to state which major I want to do and which school i want to go into. I want to double major because just in case I can't get into medical school, I want to have something to fall back on and so I can go into business instead. Is this a good idea?

Study whatever you want, where ever you want, and get all your pre-med prereq’s done. Your GPA’s important, and the only way to keep your GPA high is if you’re studying something you like and find interesting. If that’s biochem and economics for you, go for it! I went with biology and public service. I have friends that are premeds with everything from history to physics to nutrition to chemistry. Doesn’t matter as long as you do well!

Short answer: YES.

What is your question? Is it about majoring in BME & minoring in econ or is it about a double major? If you can handle Biomedical Engineering AND an econ minor, go for it. A BS in BME won’t get you a stable/dependable engineering job at all, so don’t depend on that. As for business jobs, a BME degree will definitely help you a lot in landing a business position (engineering degrees are preferred over business degrees), however if your heart isn’t in it & engineering isn’t your thing/doesn’t interest you (see below) then you likely won’t perform well and in turn won’t end up with a job anyway.

Judging by you wanting to major in BME but not wanting to work in the engineering field but rather in the business field if you don’t get into medical school, I’m led to assume that you chose BME purely for statistical reasons - sorry if my assumptions are wrong. Don’t be misled by numbers and then choose your major based on the “highest acceptance rate.” Major in what you like.
