BME or econ -> Med/dent School

Hey, im really debating on majoring in economics, biomedical engineering, or biology. My goal is to end up in med or dental school, but I have a few concerns...

I always read that majoring in something other than biology is fine and that you should do what you have a passion for. However, would a med school really want to take an economics major over a biology related major with similar stats/test scores? I just want the best chance possible to get to a good program.

Also, would it be a very large courseload to fulfill the premed requirements as an econ major...Im assuming not a lot of the course requirements overlap. The premed courses are challenging enough, I don't want to burn myself out.

However, the idea of biomedical engineering intrigues me. Does anyone have any statistics about BME med school placement or know anyone that went from BME to med school? This sounds like an ideal major for me, I just don't want to pursue it if it does not give me a good chance to get accepted into some med schools/

econ major for pre-med is fine. Perhaps you will be the one to solve the health care mess.

You should major in whatever you want. All you need to be ready for med school (biology wise), is the 2 semesters of bio + bio chem…majoring in bio is really just overkill, unless that’s what you’re really interested in.

You should check out the pre-med forum if you don’t believe me tho, lots of good info there.

Actually, BME’s beat the average med school placement percentage by about 10%, although this trend is declining a little bit. It’s a great idea though. In fact, I’m in a similar scenario, except I’m considering a minor or dual major in econ because i just really like the subject, but will definitely premed in bme.
