I know this really depends on the individual...but...

Can I actually take on a job?
Also, what kinds of jobs are looked on as 'impressive' or 'worthwhile' by colleges? Does it really matter the type of job you do? ...my schedule is as follow...

School from 7:55-2:45 ~ AP and Honors classes [plan to take 3 AP exams]
Tae Kwon Do [1 hour, 2x a wk]
ECs ~ Clubs..
Sunday~ Temple
Taking SATs [shooting for 2200+], SAT IIs [probably Math, English, and Chemistry]

Why do you want to take a job? Only to impress colleges? Then don’t. If you’d like the extra $ and the experience, then do so. If you can’t fit it in, then don’t.

Any job that’s not robbing folks will be seen as a useful EC by the few schools that even care about any EC at all. And that is a very small list, you know.

If you aren’t applying to those, then the vast majority (95%) of American colleges care about your scores and transcript.

If you don’t need the money, don’t bother. I worked at Dunkin’ Donuts with a girl who was trying to game her application by getting a “working man’s job,” despite coming from an insanely wealthy family. Often times she never even picked up her checks. Part-time jobs for high school students aren’t a dime a dozen these days; a lot of people actually need them.

Though to answer your question, as you said, it does depend on the individual. I worked only a few days a week throughout high school and sometimes it got challenging, but it was doable. Look how much free time is in your schedule right now and judge.
