Would it be impossible to work for 5 hrs/day two days a week during the school year, on top of a rigorous courseload and many ECs? Does anyone else have a job like this? I don't want to risk getting bad grades, but I really want to get a job.

advice please? thanks!

i'll help you bump this!
i'm thinking about getting a job too, but i'm not sure if i can handle the pressure with the job adding on top of al the ecs and homework.

i work monday & wednesday & thursday for four hours.
but i get our at school around 1:30 and my load isn't extremely high.. and I don't really have any other time consuming ecs.

i think it is possible, especially if one of the days is friday,
but you should be really strict to yourself.

Yes. Both S and D do so. For them it's not added pressure, it's release from the pressure. Having a job gives them independence, financially and emotionally. It's an important step in joining the world in which your parents don't rule everything. As for EC's, every interviewer with whom I've spoken respects working more than joining yet another meaningless club at school.

i work one day a week for four hours, and then 1 day every other weekend for four hours...so 6 hours/wk

i also am a varsity athlete, editor in chief...etc, etc

I think it's a good idea and it's very possible. I am a rising HS Senior and I wait tables at a local restaurant twice weekly for 6 hours a night. It's nice to have some extra cash.

In terms of whether it's possible...it absolutley is. I play 3 Varsity Sports, do the musical and drama, maintain high GPA and high course load, debate, etc etc etc ...I won't bore you. The point is that it is possible for sure.

I worked 80 hours a week over the last two summers and 25 hours a week during the school year while taking the most rigorous coursework available at my school (5 APs this year). I really enjoying trading and investing (which is part of my job), so performing market and securities research at home also takes a lot of my time. And I'm involved in plenty of ECs including the varsity tennis team, student government, key club, etc. I've worked since I was 14 and a freshman in HS (now a senior), and I've only gotten 1 B, so I wouldn't say that work has adversely affected my grades at all. Overall, it's stressful, but certainly possible to continue to do well in school.

10 hours a week is really not that much. I'm sure you'll be fine. Sure, you'll have to sacrifice leisure time, such as posting on this site and watching tv, but it'll all be worth it when you get that paycheck. Just make sure that you allocate your time properly so that you can successfully complete all your coursework.
