Can I pocket financial aid such as Pell Grant, Cal Grants if I'm using post 911 at a UC

I’m applying to transfer next year to a UC. I’m currently attending a community college with a GPA of 3.94 and a prior veteran.

I’m planning to use my Post 911 g.i bill once I arrive. However, I’m also eligible for Pell Grant, Cal Grant A/B, and hoping to receive other scholarships.

My question is, Cal Grant B is scholarship can be used for personal uses as well and they also match Cal Grant A. Will I be able to pocket the Cal Grant B if I use the post 911 to pay for my school? (I know I can pocket Pell Grant)

You are entitled to the Pell.

@Gumbymom can this person GET a Calgrant if their full cost of attendance is otherwise covered?

Schools cannot award you aid for any costs in excess of the cost of attendance (exception being if you have full costs met, and are entitled to a Pell).

@thumper1: I do not believe if eligible for the Calgrant but full cost of attendance is covered, that you will be able to pocket the excess. I would tag @kelsmom. Hopefully she can give you a definitive answer.

@jaylee09 what year did you graduate from high school or how old are you? Did you graduate from a Calif high school?

I thought that Cal Grant eligibility had to be used rather soon out of high school? I need to look that up.

@Longsx3

Much depends on how GI Bill views Cal Grant and how Cal Grant is worded.

If Cal Grant is perceived to be a tuition award, then that “pays first” and then GI bill pays (essentially reduced by Cal Grant)

The veterans office and the financial aid office at your target university should be able to walk you through this. Contact them to get the information that you need.
