Can I send a supplemental recommendation?

I looked through all of the application instructions and didn’t see anything about this. Does anyone know if I can send an extra letter of recommendation from a community member?

i asked the brown admissions too. i sent three. but if u do a fourth one, itll be too much and thats not good. stick with three rec letters. my opinion.

Because there isn't an official form, should they just send an additional letter and make sure my name and school are clearly on it?

Careful on this - only send additional ones if it is from someone who knows you well and can tell them more about you than what the teachers say about your actions inside of the classroom, etc.

Okay..so I went on a foreign exchange with Rotary International Youth Exchange for a year. The president of the Rotary club here went to Brown. He knows a lot about what I did in Germany and we've had a lot of conversations about travel, international relations (my major), etc. I don't know him on a very personal level, but on learning that I want to go to Brown, he offered to write me a recommendation. Good idea or no?

Depends. Can he grant some insight about you that your teachers cannot? If so, is it something that truly defines you and makes you stand out?

Yeah, I'm sending one from the editor of the local newspaper. I had a writing internship there this past summer.

Well I think I will. I want to go into International Relations, and my teachers aren't really as clued into those interests as this guy is. He could really highlight my exchange year, while I don't think my teachers will.

Should he just type up a letter or should I use a form? If a letter, what should be included?
