I just applied to stevens yesterday, but i looked more into the requirements and saw that they want students in calc. And students that interview?! My sat is 1900, 1340 m + cr score. I take pre-calc. And gpa is 3.92 weighted. Can i still make it if i don’t interview or take calc?
In state too.
What was your math SAT?
670
I think it’s a great school and you should go for it. I assume you applied EA II? That will increase your chances of getting in.
I will share our experience in going there for the SOB visit day on a Saturday morning in the fall, and my son’s interview in early December. A 670 is a terrific score, but I will say that based on our discussions with professors at the SOB, the school puts a lot of emphasis on the math SAT. I don’t know if that’s your superscore, but maybe you could increase it by putting your nose in a prep book and trying to recognize the trick questions so beloved by the College Board and realizing what my son calls his “stupid” mistakes (didn’t read the question thoroughly, etc). The SAT only goes up to Algebra II so it wouldn’t require knowledge of calc. My son aced the math SAT on the first try by doing problems in the book and taking practice tests (he was also obsessed with getting an 800. In contrast, his crit reading and writing scores were 590 and 600).
You could also try to take the Math SAT II Level 1. That one goes up to Algebra II/Trig or precalc, I can’t remember. The SAT II Math Level II is hard and not worth your while). Also, just tell yourself that getting anything but an A+ in your precalc class is unacceptable (that used to motivate me to really work at the homework problems and do extra problems, especially before tests and quizzes, until I got 100% of them right. (Obsessed, I know ;-), but it worked.) Also, maybe you could get a strong letter of recommendation from your math teacher. I think other significant factors would be how well you’ve done well in your math classes, whether they were honors, advanced honors or AP, whether you took AP Stats and if so how well you did. In the SOB they were also very interested in any programming classes my kid had taken (zero point zero) and what computer languages he knew (same answer) – so having some background there would be relevant as well.
Did you miss the interview because you didn’t sign up in time, or couldn’t travel? I will say that my son did not enjoy the interview. The interviewer was a 5th year joint degree student who worked at the admissions office part-time. He seemed to me like a nice guy and very impressive, but according to my kid he did not give off the warm fuzzy vibe. The questions were real interview questions (my son was prepared for them because he had researched college interview questions online and had thought of coherent responses in advance), and not a “what can I tell you about the school,” conversational type of thing.
I admire you for your desire to be admitted. It’s a tough but tremendous school and I wish you all the best. Go for it!
Good luck,
