I've just gotten reports back from my teachers on my finals..and these are my semester grades:

Precalc (reg): C
Phys (hnr): C
Eng (hnr) : C
Spa (reg) : A
Art (hnr): A
U.S. history (AP): B

in the gpa grading scale, honors classes are weighted more, so if I got a B in an honor class, it would weigh as an A.

because of the C's in those three classes, have I screwed up my chances for getting into RISD/CU/Carnegie Mellon/Art Center (pasadena)/UCLA (graphic design major for all of the schools listed)?

I've gotten conflicting responses from people that art schools either cared more about your portfolio than your grades, or that grades and portfolio both equally mattered...so which one is it?

You wil have very little chance of getting into either RISD( unless you have an amazing portfolio)j and probably no chance for CMU. You would have a chance at a number of other art schools. Art kids have not traditionally gotten great grades. If you have a good portfolio, I am sure someone will take you.

i don't think you've "screwed up" your chances for art schools,i know some (like SAIC) could care less and apparently RISD cares quite a bit about grades and SATs,but my grades weren't spectacular(in junior year i had a D- in math and a c in biology,in sophmore i failed math, and didn't do it senior year, though my world lit/lit/english were all very good)and I got into RISD.so if you have a really good portfolio they might not really care.

I don't know about the specific schools you mentioned, but I can tell you that my S's grades were nowhere near as good as yours (honors Physics? pre-calc? wow!) they were about like rachaelray4ever's above, he also failed math one year, (though he has great SATs), and he got in to several real good schools on audition. He's an actor, not an artist, but I imagine it works the same.

My advice to you is to get a good college advisor (there seem to be a few on this site, but we didn't even know about this site then!) and look around. It's more than "someone will take you." If your portfolio is good, you will have many opportunities to choose from. Get some wide-ranging advice, and expand your horizons a bit!

My impression is that taking honors classes and doing okay in them will not be a bad thing for you. My daughter really struggles with her classes, because she's not traditionally a very academic-minded student. Her goal has been to be "upward trending", by doing a little bit better each year, if she can. Her school doesn't have class choice; everyone takes the same courses, and by senior year, all of her classes will be AP. Our hope is that even if her GPA is only 3.0-3.2, she'll be a strong candidate academically because of the challenging course load. Admin folks we've talked to have said that's pretty much on target, for the schools that care. (As others have said, many art schools are much more about portfolio.)

thank you for your responses =]

-__- i got my official report card.. and two of my grades were changed.
Physics- D
AP US- C

icemistral, how did you do on your AP tests? If you passed the AP Physics exam with a 3 or higher, perhaps you could go back to your Physics teacher and request a C?

Try CCA in Oakland/San Francisco. Great school, flexible admission standards for motivated art students.
