Can I still qualify for scholarships with National Merit Commended status?

I have scored in 97 percentile. I am hopeful that I get commended. If I get commended, would I be still eligible for my parents corporate scholarship? How can I find out? Thanks

What was your score?

Corporate scholarships have their own policies.

I scored 203 and I live in Florida. What is the criteria they use? Do they even care about NMSC’s echleons like ‘Commended’, ‘SF’, and Finalists etc. Thanks

203 will likely be above the Commended cutoff.

As for the corporate scholarship: most programs are evaluated in a process similar to that used to determined one’s fitness for the National Merit Scholarship; that is, the criteria are ECs, essays, and grades as long as the PSAT score is past the required threshold.

Hi Silverturtle:

My Dad works for Northrop and they use a company called Scholarship AMerica Program. Here is the quote that my Dad got from the company communication office

<<the scholarship=“” america=“” program=“” is=“” managed=“” by=“” an=“” outside=“” organization=“” we=“” do=“” not=“” get=“” involved=“” in=“” the=“”>></the>

I am not what the heck it means. My Dad filled out the application and submitted it. I am not sure if they even ask for the PSAT scores. It appears that someone sends out list of people who have met the basic standards which could be like the ‘COMMENDED’ status to be considered for the scholarship.

Are there any outside scholarships available for me based on the ‘COMMENDED’ status? Thanks

The corporate scholarships are evaluated by the National Merit Corporation, the same body that evaluates applicants for National Merit Scholarships. They already have your score.

There are some schools that give scholarships for Commended students, but I don’t know of any outside scholarships; there may be some, though.

Silver:

Based on my research, the Corporate schoalrships given by Northrop and Walgreens (my Dad and Mom) are given to National Merit Finalists. I highy doubt that I would qualify for the Corporate Scholarship with my commended status.

I am trying to plead my case with NMSC by looking to my academics, and my SAT Subject test scores. I am taking my January 2010 SAT. If I nail a 2200+, I may have additional evidence to demonstrate that I am worthy to get the scholarship.

I have even asked them to offer me another PSAT opportunity to show them what I got. I had a very bad allergy day on October 14, 2009 to do well in that exam.

Nothing hurts to try at the least.

Pleading your case about not making the NMSF cutoff won’t help much imo.

Jersey, I understand that. It does not hurt to try. After all, we live in a free country.

You will not be considered a Semifinalist no matter how much you plead, act2400. NM semifinalist status is determined by your PSAT score alone; your other stats have no bearing.

Xr: I am requesting NMSC for taking another shot at PSAT. I was feeling under the weather on October 14, 2009. Would they be able to offer a make-up exam of any kind to prove my case? Are there any exceptions? God Damn, all the free money is based one stupid PSAT test. I could miss out on $6000 scholarship every year through my parents’ company.

^Well, you can try, but I doubt they’ll grant it to you. Don’t they only administer the PSAT test like once a year?

-Calico

My Dad told me in the scholarship application, it gives 2 options. One have you taken October 14 or 17, s009 PSAT or have made special arrangements with NMSC. God knows what that means.

I don’t know about makeup testing, but PSAT is held once a year.

However, I know someone who had not taken the PSAT, as they had other priorities, but made it into Semifinals by submitting her SAT score and making arrangements.

Look, I don’t want to sound rude or pessimistic, but the chances of NMSC allowing you to take another test is probably very, very close to 0%. The PSAT is what they use to determine whether you made the cutoff or not. There are no exceptions… if you could argue your case, what prevents the other tens of thousands of people who made commended to argue as well?

You can try, but it might (and probably will) be a waste of time.

Based on “feeling under the weather” will not qualify this poster for an exception to use other scores instead of PSAT score, but like chaos said, there have been exceptions. My daughter’s friend had to miss the PSAT due to a close family member’s funeral, she still was a semifinalist and advanced to finalist in the NMSC program, I think based on her SAT scores alone. It is rare and has to be documented at the time the test was missed.

My Dad got the call from NMSC. Sorry, nothing can be done. Case closed. Thanks guys… I should have walked out of the exam on October 14. Haunting thoughts will never fade.
