Can I take the Indian Institute of Tech ology entrance exam as an American Resident?

I am currently a high school senior in the US and I have applied to several colleges here. Since I am an Indian citizen, I am also quite interested in IIT. Is there any way I could apply from America?

Sounds like it, but you should contact them directly. A mention is made that Indian nationals in other countries are handled by the missions (embassy) in that country, so maybe start there.

The entrance tests to the IITs abroad have been held till now only to admit Indian nationals. This is for the first time that it has been planned to admit foreign students through tests held abroad. It is aimed that the plan would be operationalised from the JEE/GATE exams to be conducted in 2017,” a senior member of HRD Ministry said.

The students will be selected through a common entrance exam which would be administered by the IIT with the help of Indian missions in these countries.
