Okay, so I am junior in high school and with the help of my uncle, he has pretty planned out my college career already. However, he wants me to take the sat II subject tests in spanish and chemistry. Now, because of a special school next year, I won't be taking AP Chemistry or Spanish III ( I am currently in the high school Spanish 2 right now.) Should I buy some books and take the test anyway? I might do fine in the chemistry one, but I have heard the Spanish is moreso on the side of native speakers and those who have taken at least three years of Spanish.

Personally, I think you should. If you think about it- if you take those tests as a junior, you’ll still have senior year to retest if desired. You should buy the books/test prep material and prep for the tests and see where you would fall. Of course, if you can do very well on the first time, that’s a plus too. Hope that helps!

Prep books are incredibly useful for some subject tests. The only one that I think wouldn’t need a prep book is US History.

The prep book tells you what kind of questions frequently come up on the test. Sure, you may know chem pretty well from studying out the textbook, but you may not be studying in depth the same points that are more often stressed on the SATII.

As far as Spanish goes, definitely get a prep book. You will be crazy not to unless you’re a native Spanish speaker or are amazingly confident in your Spanish vocabulary and grammar skills. I pass Spanish class in school with flying colors but once I opened up a SATII Spanish prep book in a bookstore, the type of questions they ask definitely made me pause to think about the correct answer. You need to have the grammar rules drilled in your head and also know a number of vocabulary words that may not be covered in whatever textbook you use in class. There are tons of fill in the blank questions, and a number of them are just testing whether you know various vocabulary. If you don’t know what a majority of the vocab choices mean, then you won’t do so well.

I think the extent of Spanish 2 usually doesn’t cover everything that shows up on the SATII Spanish test. You should do some outside of class studying if you plan to take SATII Spanish this year. I’m in AP Spanish this year, which is equivalent to year 5 of Spanish at my school since we started language in 8th grade, and I remember in Spanish 2 we only learned up to the basics of subjunctive mood in terms of grammar.

Have you thought about taking a different SATII in addition, or instead of Spanish? MathII test can be pretty easy if you have done well up to precalculus and do a small amount of prep.

Okay, thank you! I’ll be sure to get some books and start working on it as soon as possible. :)
