So my Common App essay is completely done but there are two schools that are not on the Common App that I are not on Common App which has an essay, Rutgers and Penn State. Although, they don't have the same essay prompt as the Common App, I can still use the same essay if I fix it around a bit and make it fit their question. Is it fine if I do that or would that be considered self-plagiarism?

If you can make it match their prompt, go for it. I don’t think there are any college conspiracies where they compare your essays
You wrote it, you can do what you want with it!

There is no such thing as self-plagiarism :)

Sure you can. My D modified her CommonApp essay for most of the schools and scholarships applications. It just got better and better after each revision.

Definitely. But be thoughtful about addressing the prompts given by the non-CA schools. Make the necessary edits to make it fit.

FWIW, There is such a thing as self plagiarism, but it does not apply to this situation. (If you published an article in the newspaper, then reused three paragraphs from the middle of it in a magazine article that can be considered “self-plagerism”.

Thank you so much guys! Now I don’t have to write two extra essays!
