My drivers license is suspended and I wanted to know of I can use it to prove florida residency to obtain in state tuition?
Does anyone know if I can?

The bursar’s office of your college will tell you if it’s sufficient or not – not anyone here.

I wanted to know if maybe someone HERE has gone thru that and can advise me better. Don’t be a smart person and give a smart inconsistent comment back. I’m am trying to go back to school and I’m proud that Im fixing my life to better myself. If you don’t know the question don’t tell me that the school will tell me… I knew the school will tell me if it’s good or not I just wanted to know if someone here has gone thru that and can enlighten me!

I wasnt’ trying to be snarky. The reality is colleges themselves have inconsistent requirements – even within the same state. What I’m saying is that your particular situation is unique and you should go directly to them – as opposed to anecdotes that well meaning posters would give you here. Best of luck to you.

The following might help you understand what’s involved:

Is at least one parent a Florida resident?
If so, and you are not an independent adult, then it should be easy to demonstrate THEIR residency (which is what matters for dependent students). Filing the FAFSA and copies of tax returns will do it.

If in fact you are an independent adult, then proving residency won’t be as simple as presenting a driver’s license (expired or not). Typically, you’ll need to prove you resided and payed taxes in the state for at least a year before the start of the semester in which you’re claiming residency, and that you are financially independent.

(“No single piece of evidence shall be considered conclusive.” - from the first link above.)

I submitted a drivers license as my ID it is not expired it is suspended, would I have known that they would deny it because its suspended I wouldn’t have submitted it, I would’ve just gone to get a Florida ID.
I have lived in Florida since 1997. The first tier documentation is what I am missing. I’ve paid taxes and I’ve worked in Florida just not for the last year. I submitted my drivers license and bills, the bills went thru my license didn’t. I wanted to see if someone here went Thru that, appealed it like I am planning on doing and got instate tuition.

If your school already has rejected your suspended license, why not just re-submit with one of the other acceptable first-tier documents?

See Section 6 (FAQ):

Acceptable docs (Section 4):

They said I couldn’t submit a Florida ID.
I graduated high school in 2003, therefore I don’t qualify for transcripts…
I am a permanent resident, I am not allowed to vote as I am not a citizen, so I never applied for a voters registration.
Getting employment while I was pregnant never happened therefore I am waiting after I give birth in October so I’m planning on getting a job after that event, and starting school in the spring term…
A car registration since my license is suspended I don’t have a car under my name, I am fixing my license but it won’t be fixed probably until the end of the year.
My last hope is a Florida license but I don’t understand why they don’t want to take that. Out of state tuition is so unfair as I am actually a Florida resident for almost 20 years now…
I will be calling the DMV tomorrow and double check if I can get an identification as my license is suspended… And I will also contact the school and try to speak to someone else to see why wouldn’t they accept my Florida ID…

I feel as they are just doing everything possible to get out of state to get more money off of students. I am not the only one that has had trouble getting instate tuition…

I can see why they wouldn’t accept a suspended license. Until it’s reinstated, it’s not usable for driving, so it’s possible that in your state some schools may not accept it as valid ID. I’m glad to see you plan on following T26E4’s advice and asking your school why they will not accept it, as we don’t know which college you are attending, and therefore cannot give you specific advice.

I will keep you all updated on what happens tomorrow when I get some questions answered.
The college is Edison State College in Fort Myers, FL.

Good luck – I’m sure there must be some recourse, given how long you’ve lived there for.

Your graduation in 2003 should not prevent you from obtaining documentation (transcripts). That seems bizarre. I’m sure your Sec of State will issue you a state ID in lieu of your suspended drivers license. Good luck to you on this battle vs. bureaucracy.

Well I called the school. There is pretty much nothing that I can do until my license gets reinstated. Which I hope after the bankruptcy I filed gets finalized discharging the judgment on my record, that will not happen until the end of the year or at least 2 months from now.

I called Edison State and the lady said that my driver’s license cannot be suspended in order to accept it (I understand), then my Florida ID expired last year in November and since I’ve had a driver’s license the DMV will not allow me to have both therefore I never renewed my Florida ID. The school will not take the ID because it’s expired (obviously, I’m not trying to bring in something that’s expired), I offered to go to the DMV and get it renewed as I am allowed to now since I don’t have a proper driver’s license ID as a form of ID. The DMV will only allow you to has a valid drivers license or you can surrender ur suspended or valid driver’s license and get a Florida ID but you cannot use both. If I go to the DMV they will renew my Florida ID but with an issue date of today and that will not show 12 months of residency… I explained I never renewed my Florida ID because I had my license to the school but they can do nothing. The issue date on the ID has to be 12 months old, therefore there is no other choice but for me to wait until my bankruptcy is taken care of and I can get my license back at the end of the year.
The good thing is that I plan on starting in the spring term therefore I hope by then I can fix my tuition status to instate, :). I just really wanted to get everything done before hand so that late this year all I have to do is register for classes and that’s it but no can do.
Another update after my bankruptcy gets discharged at the end of the year and I get my license back…

@T26: sweetheart, 2003 transcript will not show residency for the past 12 months. Stop judging me. I am not the first or last person that will be a single mother, made wrong monetary decisions in her young years and has to file for a bankruptcy. I do however know that my life is getting fixed and I will succeed whether or not people that think I’m a failure like it or not.
I am doing my bankruptcy and fixing my credit for the years to come starting fresh so that maybe in a couple of years I can buy a house for me and my children, my license will be reinstated at the end of the year after the bankruptcy is taken care of. I will have given birth to my precious second baby boy and I am planning on a job at the hospital which will also help me with tuition since I will be studying related to healthcare.
I have a medical billing and coding diploma class of 2004 that I obtained right after I graduated high school, therefore I’m going back to school to continue that field and get RHIT, CCS certified and down the road I want to get a Masters in Health Information Administration to get RHIA certified.
I have goals, will it take longer because I have children maybe so but will it be impossible no.

And the transcripts are requested already, they have to be submitted no matter what to the school but they will not help with instate tuition.

Mnh, no one is judging you. They’re just trying to understand your situation so that they can offer the best advice possible.

Thanks everyone, for reason and trying to understand my post to provide all the help you can give. Like I said I will keep you updated.
I am submitting an appeal as my driver’s license was not just m driver’s license but iD as well therefore I had to have one or the other not both. My license was my ID of it’s own although it’s suspended it served as an ID, therefore it should be taken and the issue date on it should be considered for my 12 month residency.

I appealed the decision and they approved accepting my suspended license as it is a form of ID whether it’s suspended or not it shows more than 1 year of residency in Florida.
Therefore I am approved for instate tuition. :)

Congrats and good luck.

However, I’ve never heard of someone having their DL suspended because of a bankruptcy.

Cool! Thnks for sharing your success! You are entitled to the tuition break – I’m glad the school saw that too.
