I got into a car accident just before the finals so I had to take incomplete for 3 of my classes during spring quarter. on the ucsb financial aid website, my official award letter says that I am getting money, but I am being suspended. it didn't state the reason and tell me to call the financial aid office.
is it possible to tell them that I was hospitalized and couldn't take the finals so they can still give me the aid? I am going to take the final for the classes I missed when school starts anyways. since tomorrow is labor day and their office don't work, i am hoping someone here can offer some insight into this?

The only people who could answer this are the people in the financial aid office.

Right now it looks as if your financial aid is suspended due to unsatisfactory academic progress.

Did you complete your incomplete courses?

How long were you given to complete your incomplete courses?

DId your school give you until the summer term to complete the 3 classes)

Did your incomplete courses convert to F’s?

If you did not complete the courses by the end of the summer quarter, you probably have not made satisfactory academic progress, which is why your financial aid is suspended. If you needed an extension because you were in the hospital (were you still in the hospital at the end of the summer term?), it was up to you to request it from your professors.

If you still are on extension to complete the incomplete course, perhaps your school is not going to let you take new courses until you complete the incomplete courses (remember until they are complete, you probably have not made satisfactory academic progress.

You probably will have to finish the old before you start anything new.

Have you already arranged to take the finals with the profs or been in communication with them? If so, take any documentation of that with you to the finaid office, printed emails or written communications. How long were you incapacitated following the accident? Sybbie’s quote says the instructor has the authority to extend the deadline in unusual circumstances. They may have expected the finals to be taken before the start of fall classes. But only the finaid office can tell you for sure.

You can certainly appeal it.

I had a similar situation when my husband was diagnosed with cancer a month before finals and we had to go out of state to M D Anderson in Houston for a couple of weeks right at finals time. My school actually gives you a year to finish an incomplete and FA was not affected at all in that period (I did 2 of them right after the semester finished but one of them took almost a year as we were traveling back and forth to Houston for treatments and even lived there for a while).

I don’t quite understand how quarters work (I’m familiar with the semester system) - is the summer quarter part of the regular school year?

Definitely talk to the FA department and make an appeal. And try and get those exams finished ASAP. The one I waited a year to do was tough as I had to basically reteach myself the whole semester as I’d forgotten most of it.

Good luck.

My grades right now are still I as in incomplete, so i guess summer session doesn’t count as a normal quarter. UCSB starts really late, at the end of september. I will be moving back a week before school start and I’m definitely planning on visiting the academic advising for some info and arrange to take the finals. I’ll be calling the FA office for some info too.

If your grades are still incomplete, you probably have not made satisfactory academic progress, which is why there is a hold on your financial aid. If you have attempted 12 credits (3 classes) and you got 3 incompletes, you have made 0 progress.

I would recommend that you finish these incompletes ASAP so that you can have your financial aid released before the next term begins.

so they won’t give me any aid for fall quarter once the quarter begins? I am still doing physical therapy and can’t walk as of yet so I can’t move back to school just yet…

If you can’t complete your current courses (where you have incompletes), how are you going to start new classes?

I will be honest with you; if I were a financial aid officer, I would not give you any more aid until you complete your outstanding courses (I think your school should follow suit and they probably will because you are not making academic progress).

UCSB states the following:
