according to the chart, all financial aid would be cut off starting the next quarter. D: But I could not help but reread this line regarding suspension: "Suspension status means that you failed to pass a minimum number of units in an academic year" Notice the "year", not a "quarter".

would it mean the fin aid office will suspend me after they look at my overall year, or they will suspend all financial aid i receive. . now?

Mind you, I intend to redeem myself next quarter by making up classes and catching up on the units.

please tell me soon. . . so that I can know if I have to work overtime during the school year and summer.

Sweetheart, the best thing to do now is CALL the financial aide office and talk to them specifically. I’m afraid to give you false hope by things I can only assume, not know entirely.

hmm, well what’s your GPA? and what’s your major ?
I have had friends who failed the first quarter ( like had a gpa starting with 0.something) but they got to stay for another quarter and was given a 2nd chance to redeem themselves, Muserz gave a good advice to call but i am guessing all the offices are closed right now. Idk if they, the people who failed their first quarter, had fin aid or not but if they do give you a 2nd chance you’d better bust your @$s and get a high enough GPA for winter so you can raise your overall GPA to a 2.0. ( for eg if you got a 0.5 gpa for fall 2010, you should aim for a 3.5 or higher for winter 2011) it shouldn’t be too bad since you’re probably repeating the classes. And i believe they let you retake a class up to 16 units worth so if you failed 8 of the 12 units you were taking you can retake those and have a higher GPA. Most of the classes that are offered for fall are offered for winter also, like chem 1A, math 3A, econ1, and others. Good luck.

As a current first year I can tell you that a lot of us did not do so well Fall quarter. I barely scraped by with a 2.25, and partying is a definite cause. But I’m okay with that… because I’ve done more growing up in the past few months than I have in the past few years.

It all depends on what courses you’re taking, and how adventurous you are.

And OP, don’t sweat it. Call FinAid and just do well for the next two quarters

Hi the hairy lemon, so I am an undergraduate student at UCSB in my first quarter, and my circumstance are looking a lot similar to yours. My gpa looks below the academic probation status. So what happened to you? Did they give you the second chance? If so, how did you obtain it?

Hi denelly, he was still posting this summer and giving advice as a current UCSB student, so I can only assume he made it through and is a junior now. You can’t PM him until you have 10 posts, so I will PM him for you if he doesn’t respond within a day or two.

Hi Denelly, I just sent a PM to Mr. Hairy “the Lemon” As you know, students are in finals right now, so he may be too busy, but (knowing him from nothing except his posts) he is a great person and will give you advice when there is time. Just for you and anyone else like you–since this is not from your parent(s)–CALM DOWN, EAT, SLEEP, AND STUDY! NOTHING ELSE!
LOTS of students have issues first or second quarter/semester of college, I know I did. It all turned out fine so long as you keep your focus. Sleep, eat, study, and do nothing else for the next week. Stay away from any drama.
Someone out here is thinking about you…all of you at UCSB and especially those in their first year.
(((Mom hugs))) I know that makes anyone reading this annoyed or bugged, but there it is. You may be all grown up, but we still love you and remember when you needed us!

Hi denelly & WorldWorld, I am in a similar situation and so worried as to whether my financial aid will be taken away. I am in my first quarter too & I’m taking 12 units but for sure I am failing at least two of them. I have an A & B in the other two but will not for sure make the 12 required units. I will most probably have only 7 units completed.

I am hoping that Mr. Hairy “the lemon” will be able to give me some hope too. Good luck to you and please post the advise Mr. Hairy “the lemon” gives you.

I’ll pm you too keeno when I get the chance. I’m currently at work, but I am actively visualizing what I am going to write when I get home/get off for lunch.
