Can it hurt to take an ACT?

I am thinking about taking the ACT on standby in April. I didn't prep at all, I just want to see where I stand. If I score poorly and decide not to send the scores out to colleges, will they be able to see that I took an ACT but chose not to send the score? Or will colleges be oblivious to the fact that I ever took any other ACT besides the ones I send them?

Thanks.

If you don’t send a score to a college, it will not affect your application. However, be aware that certain colleges’ policies REQUIRE that you send them all of your test scores.

If you want to see where you stand, perhaps you should try a practice test? These are sometimes offered for free, through places like local libraries. Or you could take them from the many study guides designed to help you study for the ACT.

All colleges accept either an ACT or SAT so you will never have to send it if you send an SAT score (HMC might be an exception, I can’t remember).

^ I understand that. I wanted to know if I DO decide to send in my ACT scores from say the test I take in September, will they know I took a test now if I choose not to send this score.

No, don’t put it on your common app and don’t send it. Just send your SAT and no one will ever know you took the ACT.
