Can Languages help me THAT much? Thanks.

Hello,

I'd like to be brief and to the point - I'm quadrilingual, having learned French and Spanish in high school. I have taken both AP French and AP Spanish and got 5's on both. Additionally, I'm fluent in Russian. Nevertheless, my I have a 3.95 weighted GPA 10-12 - my SAT scores are great, however (mathii 780, span 780, french 780) and a 2250. Also, in my sophomore year, I was indirectly part of a horrible cheating scandal (I was cheated off of) and was have a WF on my transcript from that class... my junior grades are stellar. My GPA is so low because an F is factored in my gpa.

Anyway, I'm completely and utterly obsessed with languages and linguistic studies - would I have a shot at the ivies? Is my "talent" going to save me at least a little? Or will I be thrown in the trash at the sight of the WF. My essays are really passionate, one of which explains the cheating situation.

Any advice? Pointers? Chance to those schools? Thanks.

PS - I'm a professional pianist as well, and will be sending a DVD of my playing at a recital.

ALSO - i'm getting my letters of rec from my language teachers. and another from my junior year art hist teacher, who knew about the cheating but saw how much I changed.

Multiple languages are typical among ivy students and will not make you stand out in that pool.

The cheating? It will depend on how you and your school handle it but academic dishonesty will hurt.

Looking at the full picture, ivies are probably not realistic reaches. Too many Bs and Cs even without the cheating. Your scores are just average at top schools. Don’t get hung up on them, put thoughtful effort into schools where you have a real shot.

yeah, but I’m not necessarily using them as a tool to get in - I want to apply as a linguistics major… something I reckoned many people don’t take… so I thought that was the unique ‘rarity’.

Bump! Someone help…

I don’t think that a native tongue + English and two of the most common world languages can save you from the Cs and Fs you’ve gotten. It’s good that your achievements are in line with your intended Linguistics major, but as a whole they are unfortunately not that impressive.

2% chance… Lol?

Ivies will be difficult. Languages are rather common and Russian is native likely as billabong mentioned.
For instance, I know english, and two native indian languages. However, I can read and write Latin and ancient Greek (unique)
Apply to schools right below the ivies and youll have chancesthere

I hate to say this but it seems like a longshot.

You have a lot of C’s and B’s and pretty much no significant EC outside of learning languages…

Not even 2% :p

Also, will it apply if I apply for a french major vs a linguistics major?

Will it help*

ok - in that case… what kinds of schools can I expect to be accepted to… michigan perhaps?

Really, really, really try to get across your passion for languages! Tell them about your passion for linguistics, and definitely tell them about your Language Club, especially as you hold the most senior position!

Your SATs ARE great. However, just because CC’ers tell you that you have no chance doesn’t make it true. Don’t jump right from the Ivies to Michigan! :stuck_out_tongue: 2015Applicant has a point…apply to some “lower” Ivies as well, and of course have some safeties.

thank you so much!!! that was truly beautifully inspirational. I will!!! With all my heart, it’s my passion; not a hoax or a method to weasel my way to college. It’s what I want to do with my life.

2% sounds exactly right:)
