Can LSA Students Take Music Courses

if not actually admitted to the Music Theatre and Arts program? I know they can take courses at Ross if they are available (after Ross students get first choice). But what about music composition, theory or performance? And would one have to audition first to be allowed to "cross sample" classes? Once admitted to LSA, can one actually apply for a dual major in Music and say, Economics? TIA

nevermind, got my answer–you can take courses, with permission of the professor.

^True perhaps more in theory than actual practice. Remember classes such as Music Theater are limited and have 20 students enrolled out of the 600 auditioning. Not really likely to get access to CORE classes in programs like that.

In terms of composition, there are some designed specifically for NON-music majors; others where you might get permission. But there are also courses designed for BMus comp major that are pretty high level.

From LSA, you can take the general, “academic” study of music as a second major. That is not at all the same thing as a specialized degree from the School of Music Theatre and Dance. If you were admitted, later, after reapplying, to the SOMTD, there is a program called Bachelor of Musical Arts that is designed for cognate study. Again, that’s audition/interview based.

The reason I’m going into detail here is so that you do not choose to attend UMich LSA thinking it will give you access to SOMTD. If you really want to pursue music, and double degree, you should chose a school where you’re accepted at an audition if possible, or study in LSA for a year to get your gen eds out of the way and try again the following year to transfer.

Lots of folks seem confused about how that works  Best wishes.
