yeah you can get a music performance minor. this will allow you to take classes, but you will not be a member of the studio so you will lose the ability to study privately with the professor and other privileges. You can also try out for the bands/orchestras, but they are so selective that even some music majors cannot make them.

Question: Can you audition to become a major after freshman year?

Yeah you can. To be a music major (especially if you do music ed) you have to do general education requirements that often happen in the LSA school. So if you take your general education requirements and keep practicing you can have a chance to audition for the school the next year without having to spend too much or any extra time in college. You can also study privately with a graduate student in order to keep up your skills.

Sweet - thanks! : )

If I'm applying to the College of Engineering, can I still submit like a music supplement to help with my application? I couldn't find one unless you were applying to the Music School...

i second that adamwest, except that i'm applying to lsa, but still.

I would also add that it is possible to take private lessons (one credit hour class) from Professors without being a Music major or minor. DS was able to take jazz piano from Geri Allen as a LSA Math major.
