I applied to uiuc with a 3.8 gpa. Right now I have A’s and B’s in all my classes except honors pre-calc. My current gpa (2nd semester senior year) is a 3.7. I have a D in honors pre-calc. There isn’t much I can do now about my grade. I haven’t been slacking off since I have good grades in all my other honors and AP classes. Would uiuc take away my admission? Please it is urgent. I am always an A/B student but this class was just really hard
UIUC will almost certainly not take away your acceptance in most circumstances if all you grades except for that one D are A’s and B’s. However, if you can do it, try to bring it up to a C to be 100% sure. Man a D at pre-calculus is really not gonna look good on any transcript, because if you major is anything related to Math or Engineering, you would be needing lots of calculus. So, try to get at least a C.
I’m majoring in biology and math has never been a strong subject for me. My parents wanted me to take honors
I don’t know UIUC policies. May schools will rescind for a D and that is a core class. I take it you are not an engineering student. I don’t see what is so urgent since you say it can’t be fixed. I would try to get a tutor before the final to try for a C. If you really are going to get a D, you might want to talk to your GC about contacting them so you can know for sure and make other plans if necessary.
Do you think it’s possible to raise 2.5% on my overall grade from just one test? If I can do that I’ll get a C in the class. Otherwise I will have to take the final but I am trying not to do it because I don’t usually get a good grade on a final
You should try everything you can to bring up the grade. Work hard for final. It is possible to recover 2.5% from a D score.
Ask your teacher where you stand. It’s a genuine concern and you shouldn’t be embarrassed about it. If there is no chance of raising it, you must talk to your GC and have her call UIUC to find out what will happen.
If you do have a chance of raising it, study, get a tutor, go on Khan Academy, drop anything else that doesn’t impact your admission. Nobody will look at your HS transcript after college.
The people that know work in admissions at UIUC. Posters here can guess. What do you want - to know or to guess?
By contacting UIUC now maybe it turns out its not an issue. Or maybe it is an issue, but by working with them there may be a chance to take a summer class to make up for it. They are going to see your final transcript no matter what, so worrying about “why bring it to their attention?” is misguided because they are sure to notice a D.
This ought to be a wake-up call for you. College Biology is going to be more like your math classes since it is to a large extent a quantitative science. Some areas such as anatomy are based on memorization, but genetics, evolution, ecology, molecular – these all involve math. So, to that matter, will the required Chem, Stats, Physics, and Calculus classes.
I’m not saying you can’t do it, BTW. But without making some changes it will be likely quite difficult. Going out on a limb, I’d guess your problems lie in the difference between recognition and understanding. As discussed in the book “Make it Stick” about the research on how to learn effectively, many kids get thru the homework in a class like math by flipping back and forth between solutions in the chapter and the assigned problems. They don’t do so great on the problems that don’t have close matches in the text, but get most of it done. Before the test they read thru the chapter and maybe their homework, and it all seems familiar. They’re ready, until they take the test and find out they can’t actually apply the concepts very well, especially on problems that really drill down on concepts such as word problems. If this sounds at all like you, then I suggest you use the time before college starts to learn more effective study strategies.
Can your admission be rescinded? Absolutely.
Will your admission be rescinded? No idea.
