Can one do a semester abroad and still graduate in 4 years with a bio major?

My daughter was thrilled to get a UCSD acceptance yesterday, for human biology in Warren. We’ve been looking at the major requirements and the Warren GE requirements and were just wondering how hard it would be to do a semester abroad and still graduate on time? FWIW she has some AP credits… AB calc, AP bio, AP Euro, APUSH, AP eng. lang already (at least a 4 in each) and this year, AP stats, AP psych, and AP Eng. lit. She’s thinking for the PofCs to do psychology (so she’d have one quarter credit already, assuming the ap test goes well) and maybe music.

thx for any tips/ btdt.

Yes, she can! There are a lot of students at UCSD who graduate on time after a study abroad. If she looks at the UCSD Programs Abroads Office’s website and/or visits the International Center fall quarter, advisers can help her tailor a plan that allows her to go abroad. Students typically travel their junior year, so she would probably have fulfilled most of her GEs by then anyway.

thx. I think looking in detail at just how many quarters of chemistry, math, and physics on top of the biology courses are required, in addition to the breadth stuff, was sobering.

@washugrad‌ The courses look intimidating at first, but especially at Warren, they’re fairly manageable. According to this handout at http://pao.ucsd.edu/_files/major/biomap.pdf students who study abroad graduate within four years at a higher rate than those who don’t. (I’m going to go out on a limb and say this is because they plan their four years better, but that’s just conjecture.) Additionally, looking at the Warren four year plan for human biology at http://warren.ucsd.edu/academics/four-year.html shows that there’s a lot of room for flexibility in her degree.

Many students study abroad at UCSD. I knew many biology students who studied abroad at UCSD and graduated in four years. The key is to plan ahead. Have her visit the programs abroad office early so she can get a better idea of how to make it work.

thanks for the responses.

My friends daughter did a Study abroad program during the summer after her Freshman year and took only GE courses. She figured that the GE courses would be more enjoyable if she was in another country. A unique way to get rid of some of the dreaded GE’s. She is a BME major at UCSD.

If you want to study abroad in Europe summer is the best. Mine study language and something else in another country. But she didn’t need those credits to graduate.
