My daughter is waiting for her ACT with Writing score to come back (taken October 24). Does she need to wait for that to arrive before applying to Cal Poly SLO and other CSUs?

Same with UCs? She also will be taking another SAT ll test on November 7, but wants to get it back to compare it to one of two others she took months back. And, she needs to write her Common App. essays/personal statements for the UCs.

My question then: If she were to apply to any of these schools now, do they allow her to submit the app. without the standardized test scores, knowing that she will have them sent as soon as she gets them? Or does she need to wait until they are in? Is there an area on the application that she needs to indicate a score? She's all ready to send it in to Cal Poly/other CSUs---just needs that ACT score.

With all this talk of getting CA public college apps. in early, it's making me concerned. I realize the deadline isn't until Nov. 30, but does that mean she won't have much of a chance if she waits until close to then? I'm not talking that day. But, within a week or maybe even a few days? Also, if Dec. is the last time they can take a test (for most CSUs), they obviously wouldn't have the scores back before the Nov. 30 deadline.

I can’t speak for California. But at Pitt, S sent in app in early september, since it was rolling admissions. He took the ACT on september 12 and did not get it back until october 21! Pitt e mailed us that they were holding his app for a second review and to fax it the minute we got the results online. I’m sure admissions people are aware of the snail’s pace of some of these testing services - just let them know your situation. I still find it amazing that ACT took almost 2 months to score a multiple choice exam, perhaps they should invest in new computers.

DEFINITELY apply now. I don’t know of a single school that doesn’t allow you to send scores later. Everyone does this. Schools WANT to get started on their processing of your application. Most get scores electronically and they are plugged into your D’s account instantly. Think about the fact that it isn’t even POSSIBLE to time them exactly. If the scores arrive first, they try to “hold” them and match them when they get an application. Things CAN get “lost” that way. ANd they have to be “official” (sent by ACT/SAT), so you can’t send them WITH your apps. So…sending them afterward is just FINE. Each school tells you their latest testing date (most prefer at least December…I’ve seen some go into February). They like them as early as possible, for obvious reasons. My D has sent in all her applications now, but it still testing this weekend. NO worries!

I can’t speak to your specific California schools, but this is true of all schools I know of. My D already applied to our state school, and is already accepted (love those rolling admissions) but will STILL be updating them with future scores in case they help with her scholarship application. Which reminds me…don’t DELAY if you’re in the running for scholarships…GET that application in before they run out of money.

Anyway, if your school’s deadline is Nov 30 - DO get it in now (IF she’s ready). I saw some people having computer problems who were trying to send an online application on the exact deadline for early decision schools and they didn’t make it because of the computer being so busy, I assume. I’m sure they’ll be fine, but…scary. And you say you’re allowed to take the December test, so - don’t worry!

Yes, send now if you’re ready.
Yes you can TBA your scores on applications.
Yes, you can update the scores later (look at ACT/SAT websites…they’ll tell you when your scores will be available - barring a glitch like the above poster).

At all colleges, you can apply before sending scores. Cal Poly takes through Nov test scores even if the arrive after Nov 30. Though the UCs app deadline is Nov 30, they take through the December test scores.
