Can she make it into Exeter?

Hi, I recently got into Exeter for the fall and now my sibling will be applying to be a 10th grader at Exeter this coming application season.

She has an A-B average, but mostly A's, I suspect she will do the same when she enters high school this fall (she's an 8th grader now)

I'm very confident she will do well on the SSATs because she has already started studying for them.

She has played the piano for 10 years and has won several statewide competitions.

She has very good relationships with her friends and teachers so I suspect her recommendations will be pretty decent.

She is quite the painter so she will be sending in a portfolio.

Her extracurriculars are ok, she's not quite as decorated as some people on this forum but has her share of leadership activities and she plans to get more involved when she enters high school.

I know that some people see her being my sibling as an advantage towards acceptance, but what I'm worried about is her work ethic. She's not very interested in improving herself i.e. she's perfectly happy with an A-B average, and I know that she has so much more potential than that.

Her essays will be decent, she's not the best essay writer since she struggles in english.

She will need full FA or at least somewhere around that.

Thanks! Please give me your opinions or advice on how to improve her application during the admissions process!

If she is good that will help for sure.

Is she doing anything memorable this summer? I am not talking about super exclusive and selective summer programs which are not available for her age. Volunteering? Running? Playing piano? She should develop her passion.

She may start now; Exeter application essays have stayed constant for quite a few years. She may also use a common application.

Sounded like me a few years ago. I do not think Exeter will find that too pleasing (especially for a full FA applicant) but she has a year to improve. If she works hard it WILL reflect in the teacher rec. I suggest she gets straight A+ for the first marking period.

I think she has a great shot, but a great shot at Exeter is miniscule. Does she have a strong backup list? I would hate for her to be rejected and have to stay at the public school. I would suggest Mercerberg because they offer merit aid; that along with some need aid will help.

I am guessing you like Hotchkiss, so you can help her with that. Good luck!

Ha well, I applied to hotchkiss a two years ago and got waitlisted, so I’m a very loyal exonian now, despite my confusing user name. My family would love for her to get into Exeter since that is where I’m going, and the only other school they will let her apply to is Andover because it’s close by. I really do hope she gets straight A’s and I’ve been encouraging her to study harder but I believe it’s the influence of lazy friends that’s causing her to be like this. Hope fully that will change.

What about repeating a year? That may give her a little more room to grow, I know that a few years ago the only things I wanted to do was play outside and watch the news. I was under the impression that MS grades did not matter and as long as I learned, why try?

She may be in that same boat; show her how amazing BS is and she may shape up!

Uh oh, she’s not FP!

And I mean that in all seriousness.

yeah, I know, it’s going to be especially difficult with this economy.
