ASSIGNMENT: Do small decisions often have major consequences?
Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on
this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples
taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Every decision a person makes has good and bad consequences; even the smallest decision can have major consequences. That's why it is important to consider different decisions in all their aspects. Three novels that show major consequences caused by small decisions are Animal Farm by George Orwell, The long Walk by Stephen King, and Fahrenheit 457 by Ray Bradbury.

In Animal Farm, the animals finally go through with their plan to overthrow the tyrannical humans; however, once they go through with this plan, the pigs take the place of the humans. Each decision the pigs make seem small, but in the end, they have major consequences. The pigs' decision to farm already cultivated land ends up leading to a dispute with other farms. The pigs' decision to increase hours leads to an unstable community. Each decision the pigs made lead to an increase of the animals' hardships. Unencouraged, tired, and malnourished, the animals are no longer able to sustain the once plentiful land. Their dreams of independence are no longer insight.

Also having a major consequence, Brady from the Long Walk and his decision to enter the competition ultimately leads to his near death. Living in the country, Brady and his family don't have much to rely on. So, on a whim, Brady enters The Long Walk in order to gain respect and most importantly, anything he wants/needs. The Long Walk is a grueling competition where 100 boys are forced to walk as long as possible or die. Although Brady saw his decision to enter the competition as an inconsequential decision, his name is drawn. Brady, never expecting to get chosen, now has to fight for his life; however, along the way, he has to fight for his friends lives too. In the end, Brady wins, but not without the loss of 99 other boys.

In Fahrenheit 451, Montag lives a life of contempt and solitude all because of decision to steal one book from a burning fire. In Montag's world, books are banned. Not only seen as evil, but as false testimonies from the old world. So when Montag steals a book from a fire he himself started, he takes a huge risk. At first, Montag feels as though stealing the book is no big deal, but then, when Beatly, his boos, comes to his house, he becomes a full-blown criminal. He is forced to hide and sustain himself without the help of society.

The pigs', Brady's and Montag's seemingly small decisions ends up costing them much more - their lives. All decisions, big and small, can have great impacts and major consequences.
