I've heard from somewhere that having too many units when transferring from a CC to UC, is not good and by too many units, 70+ in this situation. The reason was that because you have too many units, you won't be taking as many classes once you transfer, meaning less money for the UC institutions. Does that make sense?
However, when i talked to the person in my transfer center, he was like "it doesn't matter how many units you take as long as the units aren't from a 4 year universities"

As i'm planning on taking 17 units next semester which adds up to 74 units before transferring, i am concerned about this issue. If it's going to affect me in anyway, i'm planning on dropping some classes. Can someone clarify this issue for me? thank you very much and have a wonderful day! (:

From what I know, UC’s don’t care how many units you have it just cannot exceed 80 units. Anymore than that you are transferring as a senior standing student. With 74 units, you are totally fine.

nooo haha, you can transfer with 80+ units, it’s 90 that is the cutoff for senior standing
Which is better.
It also depends where you apply from and where you’re applying to:

For example, if you’re applying to Berkeley, you can’t have more than 80 4 year units (i.e. non-community college units,) but if you transfer to a CC before hitting the 80 mark, you can take as many units at cc as you want. It does not matter.

UCLA has a cutoff of 86 units, so be wary of that.

They all say if you’re at a CC you can take as many units as you want, it’s basically 4 year units that have a cap–they said you can take 150 units at CC, but you have to realize most give you credit towards your degree at 70, so it’d be kinda counterproductive haha.

GOod luck!! :)

Thank you so much for the replies guys!
good luck to you guys as well!!!

Im sorry, but you guys all wrong, u can have AS MANY units as you want, before you transfer it doesnt matter, the thing is, the UCs will only transfer over 70 of those units, the rest will be awarded subject credit.

sources: TAP advisor, UCB Reps (2), counselors, and the link below, its also in the UC transfer booklet u can get at your school’s transfer center

“The University will award graduation credit for up to 70 semester (105 quarter) units of transferable coursework from a community college, meaning those units will be counted toward completion of your degree. Courses in excess of 70 semester (105 quarter) units will not receive unit credit but will receive subject credit and may be used to satisfy University subject requirements.”

thats correct if youre transferring from a CC, but if you’ve attended a 4-year it’s different and the cap does apply:

“Some campuses also limit the total number of transfer units that will be accepted. If your community college work is combined with credit from a four-year institution, different unit limits may apply. Please consult the Admissions Office at the UC campus that interests you.”

what are the limits for a four-year institution?? i just applied for transfer to UC…from Ferris State University. I’ll have 75 total semester credit hours after the Spring 2010 semester, assuming I pass my classes.

it depends on your major and which UC you’re trying to transfer to, but from what i saw generally the cap is between 80-90 semester units if you’ve attended a 4-year.

my tag lets me take up to 90 units. will have 84 when i transfer, but i know that a few classes will not go with me. its just a fact of life, but CC is cheap so who cares?

I’ll have 79 when I transfer. I’m double majoring and minoring, so that’s why.

ill have 110 semester units when i transfer (2 years) hahaha

^***, thats 2 loads of classes per semester… can you say motivation?

what can i say? i WANT berkeley hahaha
