I’ve purposely avoided serious study/practice for the science because I hate it. Plus, all my practice tests are for the older ACTs when there was the conflicting viewpoints in the science and those were my least favorite passages. I’m grateful they don’t do those anymore and put them in the reading section…
Anyway, science is keeping me from improving me score. I’ve gotten a 32 for the last 3 ACTs and I’m taking one more time in December as a senior! I just always score 28-30 in the science (except one time I got a 33–no idea how!) while my other scores are usually 33-35. Honestly, I do the usual technique of just going to the questions and then look at the graphs and figure everything out, but I always get so confused on at least one passage. But I really like science, so it’s discouraging that I’m struggling so much… Especially when all my friends tell me the science section is so easy
Ideally, I’d want science to be one of my best schools in the next three weeks! I really want to score 34-36 range for science in hopes of getting a 34+ composite.
Should I just practice?? Even with just old practice tests? Thanks!
edit: just wanted to say that the “Science Reasoning” Section is much more reasoning then science!
I somehow clutched a 36 in Science, and yeah it comes down to a ton of practice. In the beginning, I used to hate Science that I wouldn’t even do it during my practice tests. So my method is to kinda just skim over the passages and graphs so I know what’s what (30 sec per passage). I then would answer the questions, the QUESTIONS COME DIRECTLY FROM THE PASSAGE - I literally can’t stress this enough. If you do a lot of practice (google “crack act”) you’ll come to see this… good luck!
I know you probably took the test yesterday, but here’s my two cents:
I would say practice, but since you said you usually get 28-30 im assuming youve already started to do that. As far as on the test, ive found that 1) understanding of what youre reading helps, so if you are in science classes at school, look for thungs youve seen before. On yesterday’s test, i understood what most of the sections were talking about, and that seemed to help. 2) I know you said you try to read the questions first and the use the graphs. I always do it this way, and it seems to work for me. I think of the questions as a puzzle almost, you just gave to look for the right pieces. If you are struggling to comprehend what the passage is looking for, you could do a couple of things. You could quickly read the introduction and explanations to get a grasp on what it’s asking. Whenever i get confused, or feel like i dont understand, i will re-readthe question slowly, calm myself down, and proceed to look for what theyre asking. I don’tknow if my advice is valid, and I got a 31S score last time, although I think the last test went well for me. Hope this helps!
I got a 35 on the science section. At first, I kept scoring around a 30 on practice tests. What helped me was trying to understand trends rather than the content. If the content was some obscure physics topic that I never learned about, I would just focus on processing that when X increases, Y decreases, or whatever the case was. Don’t let big words/things you didn’t learn about freak you out: They can’t test you on content that not everyone has learned; they just want to see that you can understand trends!
@Bilbohistory I thought I did really great so all is well!
Well, I got my ACT scores back this morning: 33C 35E 34M 32R 31S
Slightly disappointed because another point on my composite would have helped me for scholarship reasons, but I’m soooo happy to be done and that I raised my score at least a little bit! It really is a good score, so I should be very excited about it. Now I just got to finish my college apps haha
My dad told me this morning: “I’m glad you at least did as well as your brother, but you should have let me get you a private tutor. The lesson is not to be prideful.” Lol thanks dad
@toolegittoquit Thats awesome! The Science section, while I felt good on the actual test, was actually my worst score, so I’d say a 31 is a very good score, and 33 C is awesome as that puts you in the 99th percentile. Its unfortunate that getting a 34 would have gotten you more scholarship advantages (33 is what I was looking for as far as my colleges go), but a 33 is still a top notch score. Congrats!
