I don't want any stats or anything just how many people do you think won't take their slots at bing (all the smart kids who use it as a safety.) Also, how many kids do you think they'll take off the waitlist. I'm going to visit Bing sometime soon so God willing that will help my cause.

Your question requires statistics, because that is exactly what you’re asking for. Therefore, please see my reply in [your previous thread regarding the same question](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/suny-binghamton/682092-waitlist.html).

If you want my opinion: It is highly, highly unlikely you will be offered a seat in the Binghamton University freshman class of 2013. In previous years, only 15% of waitlisted students were admitted. This year, that number will likely be lower. The economic crisis plaguing many American households means schools like NYU might be out of the question.

The “smart kids” might actually consider Binghamton, because they might be “smart” enough to realize that their family currently cannot afford that $50,000 private education.

As for visiting Bing “helping your cause”, that is unlikely. The point of an UNRANKED waitlist is that all waitlisted students are equally qualified for a seat in the class. They basically wanted to accept you, but didn’t have the room to do so. Therefore, visiting will have absolutely no impact on your position in the waitlist. The only thing that would impact your position on the waitlist is returning the waitlist acceptance card promptly. If you fail to do so, you won’t even be on the waitlist. Students who have no plans on attending generally won’t ask for a seat on the waiting list.

Does this answer your question? Again.

Don’t waste your time or money visiting Binghamton this late in the game. It will not help to get you off the waitlist. Visiting to show interest should have been done well before notification of decisions.

Start focusing on your backup plan. Visit your favorite school that offered you an acceptance. Start falling in love with your plan B.

It really is not worth it. Binghamton does not let candidates know about their status until June. That is pitiful. As nysmile said, visit every other school you applied to. You will find at least one that appeals to you.

I have mixed feelings about the wait list. I was told that SUNYs really utilized the wait list this year because they accepted less individuals than normal because of the economy. If the percentage of kids that choose to attend is the same as previous years, then the wait list is a very lucrative place to be (plenty will be taken off it). However, no one knows for sure if that will happen. It is a tough call but I’m not waiting around for Binghamton.

not true…I am a Binghamton graduate who was waitlisted in 2004 about my acceptance to the university. I have my letter…it is dated May 6th. You will know roughly 1-2 weeks after the deadline for student acceptances whether or not you have made it off the waitlist.

Well, that was 2004 and this is 2008. My wait list letter says that Binghamton will inform me of my status by June 12th. It even says I don’t have to let them know whether or not I want to be on the wait list until May 1st.

The key point is by June 12th not on June 12th. Which means you could find out prior to that date. So you might know rather early if you have the possiblity of going to Binghamton or not.

i have to say that sean256 is probably right because every by date binghamton has given us, it’s been ON that date.

kex, I have to agree with nysmile—I hope you get in, I’m gunning for my boyfriend to get in too :(… but he’s already beginning to grow fond of his other school, and it makes me happy to see him enjoying the less stressful part of this college process :).

To be honest, I know already of 3-4 kids in my school who have decided to go to Bing and many others as well in surrounding schools. I do think, however, you can always stay hopeful. I declined my acceptance as soon as I knew what school I was going to, but a lot of my friends didn’t even bother so I’m afraid the Bing is stuck with waiting to see last minute decisions. That said, it is possible you will be taken off waitlist, but at this point, I would keep my hopes high and expectations low.

My daughter was waitlisted at Binghamton as well. She received a letter today informing her “that we will not be admitting any students currently on the waiting list.” One gets the impression that many more students chose Binghamton than the school anticipated.

Is Binghamton tougher to get into than Geneseo, or are they comparable?
It seems Geneseo is more actively recruiting non whites.

Binghamton is probably tougher to get into because of the price for the education. People like the fact that Binghamton is a University as opposed to Geneseo which is a college. Binghamton is probably also more well known than Geneseo is.

“Binghamton is probably tougher to get into because of the price for the education.”

Completely false. The tuition to both schools is similar, if not the same. I am too lazy to research it right now. Anways, BOTH offer superb education at a low price. Your post makes it seem as if Binghamton offers a better education than Geneseo. Not the case, at all.

The other two reasons you gave are definitely valid, but that first one is just a flat out useless piece of information.

I am not surprised though because this is not the first time you have given out wrong information and present it with a Binghamton bias.

I agree with you that I probably should not have stated something other than fact however people seem to forget that I am a student at Binghamton so I only really know the statistics for Binghamton. The last couple of times though that I did state fact, people argued that what I said could not possibly be right. On top of that, of course I am going to be bias towards Binghamton as it is a school that I really enjoy being at. If it makes others happier I will try to not put my bias out there unless I know that it should be out there.

sean256, may I ask what is with the intensely bitter and instigatory attitude (I’m not just talking about the post above)? I can assure you that if it was anyone else who said what BingAmbassador said, you would have been much kinder in pointing out any errors. I understand you are extremely infuriated in regards to your personal application with Binghamton, and I sympathize for you. However, do NOT take your frustrations out on people completely unrelated with your problems – that is not something you want to do “in real life”, either.

Please keep in mind that BingAmbassador is a STUDENT. She is saying what she honestly believes, not something she considers to be false. Regardless, absolutely everything on College Confidential is myth unless proven otherwise.

markopolo- There is no doubt I am bitter about my personal application to Binghamton. However, Binghamton is making some rather poor decisions lately, which are illustrated in my previous posts. That adds extra resent to my posts, but in NO WAY makes them false.

BingAmbassador may be a student, but by labeling herself as an official representative of the university, it is important that she check the validity of what she says. And you are right, I am more critical with someone who is a representative of university as to someone who is not. It is in no way personal. She lends a wealth of information in other areas such as student life.

Her previous posts about a 90% yield or so is just preposterous. Anyone with common sense knows that this is a catastrophe-and coming from a university rep!? Come on.

My bigger problem is her reasoning as to why Binghamton is more selective than Geneseo. BOTH ARE GREAT SCHOOLS. Both provide a top notch education at a low price. To say that Binghamton offers a better education at a lower price than Geneseo is ridiculous . It is just false. “In real life”, it never pays to embellish facts even if you are on the other end of the spectrum.

Long and short of it, I just hold an official rep. (student or not) at higher standards-and wish for more decency towards other schools…no partisanship.

I am not instigating anything and I beg to differ that I am “intensely bitter”; I admit I am bitter, but not intensely. I must also point out that I am not bitter with my admission decision, but rather the recent malevolent practices of such a great school.

What I should have stated earlier is that Binghamton is a bigger school so for the price you are getting more options. Both schools are good but they are significantly different. As I can only speak for Binghamton, I can tell you that there are approximately 130 different majors within the 5 schools offered at Binghamton (Harpur School of Arts and Sciences, School of Management, Watson School of Engineering, Decker School of Nursing, and College of Community and Public Affairs). To find out more about all our academic offerings please visit: http://www2.binghamton.edu/admissions/academic-offerings.html.

I just want to inform you all, on an unrelated note, that admissions is working on how they can improve their application process for next year. I again apologize for my mis-information and in the future I will back up what I say.

does anyone know if anyone on the waitlist has heard back yet. any news bingambassador. ?

I do not know if they are taking anyone from the waitlist anymore. Based on the website I know that they have filled the Class of 2013 which would make me assume that at least for incoming freshman that they aren’t taking anyone else. However, it is possible that people will hear back from other schools and will notify Binghamton that they will not be attending in the fall. This could be different for transfers but I know really what you know unfortunately. I will email my boss and try to find out.

I was recently waitlisted as a transfer student. What is the likelihood of getting in? Would help to show interest if its a random waitlist?
