Can someone help me decide the major? And essay topics?

Two choices for my major are math/statistics or biology. I would like to major in biology slightly more due to the fact fhat my brother has a eye disease on of of his eye called coat’s disease. It has been said that there is not cure for that particular disease yet and i am willing to fix his eye by becoming a doctor… The thing about biology though is i only took biology regular course. I have not taken AP Bio or anything related to the medical field though i have done internships and EC every year at a hospital and so on. For math major, i chose that major to become an accountant. I sort of want to be an accountant since there are so many accountant out there that became accountant to make money off of companies by lowering their taxes that the company needs to pay. I think that if one actually appreciates the country, they must be helping out the country not taking advantage of the country. Most of my classes are math major and i did well on regular bio got both A+ but idk which i should choose

Okay, there are many smaller issues within what you’re saying.

  1. You don't know what to major in. I think you should take some classes in both subjects when you actually get to college, talk to faculty, do some research, etc. Keep in mind that you can be premed *and* major in math/statistics, but it will be hard to get a finance-related job with a science major, without going back and doing more coursework. Also, you might want to check what the requirements are to become an accountant, because I think you specifically need credits in *accounting* courses. I'm not sure that a Math/Stats degree would suffice, because there's so much to math that doesn't overlap with accounting.
  2. You don't know what career you want. If you still aren't 100% sure about a career in medicine, you should shadow doctors (in different specialties, in a hospital vs. private practice, MD vs. DO, etc.), as well as some other related healthcare professionals (nurses, physician assistants, physical therapists, etc.). Keep in mind that if you want to cure diseases, you might want a career in research, or to be an MD/PhD, because clinicians only implement treatments that other people have created. And that it will be a *long* time before you'd be qualified to fix your brother's eye...

For the accounting, see if you can use your connections to find some accountants to talk to about what their work is like (IDK if you can “shadow” them). If not, I don’t know if you can email them or cold-call them like you can with doctors, but it’s worth a shot. You want to find out what their job is like, their work-life balance, and since altruism seems to be important to you, how possible is it to actually have a say in what you do as an accountant (can you actually refuse to help companies?).

  1. You didn't ask anything about essay topics... Just look at the prompts on the Common App website: https://appsupport.commonapp.org/link/portal/33011/33013/article/1694/2014-15-common-application-essay-prompts Individual colleges might also have supplement essays, so they'll give you their own questions to answer.

You want to write about yourself in a way that will highlight your values, interests, personality, etc. to make it clear to colleges how you might fit in at their school.

Would writing about my brother is better or accountant
