The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) of the Department of Homeland Security did not confirm that you are a noncitizen (Item 14) in an immigration status associated with the requirements of eligibility for the financial assistance for which you have applied. You must submit proof to your school that you are in the required noncitizen immigration status. If you do not submit proof within 30 days, or longer if your school allows, you may not be eligible for federal student aid.
I submitted my fafsa. I am PR. What can I do?
Thanks in advance.
You need to provide them your proof (Greencard?) that you are a PR. What document do you have? Do you have a SSN? What is the status on that number? Often you must provide the original to the school financial aid office, so that involves a trip to the school, or if you can’t get there, you may have to overnight the original card or documents and they will copy and overnight them back.
Yes, I submitted my GC on the common app. Also I have a SSN. But I am afraid to lose aid because of that. @twoinanddone
But you submitted COPIES of your GC. They have to see the original. If your status changed after a GC was issued to a permanent resident status, that may be the problem. There may be no problem at all, and it may just be that you have been selected for verification.
I know a number of people who have the wrong status on a SSN, as they became citizens after the SSN was issued as a resident alien and the status never updated. These things have to be changed in person.
Yes, I was selected for verification.
@twoinanddone
But I want to know if the time would not affect to get aid?@twoinanddone.
JR…it is very important that you provide the college with whatever they are asking for as soon as possible. They are verifying your permanent residency status…so get this done, and get it done NOW. Contact the college to find out exactly what they need to see. Then get it there.
Do you live close enough to go in person?
Also, when you wrote PR, I had no idea you meant “permanent resident”. I thought you meant Puerto Rican.
You do mean permanent resident, don’t you?
You have received excellent advice. Get the college what it is asking for. It won’t affect the amount of aid you receive once the info is provided. BUT if you don’t provide the documentation, the school won’t give you aid…at all.
Yes I am permanent resident, they told me to wait until they received the fafsa. But Wouldn’t it be to late to prove that I am a noncitizen?
@thumper1
JR…you have to prove that you are a permanent resident if that is what the school is asking you to prove.
If the school has requested this documentation…get it to them…and get it to them NOW.
I’m not sure what you don’t understand about this.
Until you comply with the verification requests, you will receive NO financial aid…not a penny. None!
So if you want to be considered for need based aid…get this verification documentation to the school…NOW.
Yes, I understand. I said that the schools haven’t asked it yet. I will submit it as soon as they ask for it. They told me that I will see it on the to do list. @thumper1
From the first post, it sounds like you’ve received a notice from FAFSA that your status is being checked, and that the way to clear this is through the school(s). If you’ve narrowed it down to one school, work with that school to fix it. Yes, there could be other things that they will need verified too, like number of children in the family, or the tax return or whatever. Just work with the school to clear all the items, but FAFSA is giving you a heads up that status is already being questioned.
Yeah, they told me that I need to wait for the package. But I was surprised with that. I will talk to all financial aid schools.
