Possibly a BIG Problem

I just received my citizenship status (as in an official passport) about 2 weeks ago (before that I was a legal resident alien). Having received this information, I filed my FAFSA as a citizen. However, the SAR report came back with a notice under factors affecting eligibility that I was not documented in the Social Security department as a citizen yet. It advises me to "show proof to my schools" of my citizenship.

What I know is that it usually takes some time for the s.s. department to process the information, I believe, though how much time it would take I don't know. Now, because FAFSA don't have confirmation of this, am I currently not eligible for any aid whatsoever? Such as pell grants and etc.?

Also, how do my colleges see this? Are they going to ask me for proof and such? Or do I have to send it in myself? If so, when? Is my fafsa report not valid until they the citizenship confirmation?

I'm very lost about what to do. Can anyone please give me some steps as to what I should do now?

Yours is a unique question and it is best that you contact FAFSA and/or your colleges directly.

Make sure they understand what you are asking. If necessary, ask the FAFSA rep to speak to a supervisor to make sure you receive the correct answer.

I called last week and only had to wait 30 seconds to get connected. It was well worth the phone call.

Good luck.

You need to file for certificate of citizenship form N-600you can google it to download or get from your INS department/ cost sround $300 and takes 6 months to 1 year to process. Correct your FAFSA with your permanent resident number and explain to shools that what is happening.

Call the schools and see what they require. Some won't care unless you are admitted and decide to attend, at which point they'll probably just require you to send them a copy of your passport.

The SS Admin. couldn't verify my citizenship either (although I've been one for a few years now) and I called all my schools' finaid offices. Some told me to not do anything as of yet, and some told me to send in a copy of my passport when I am accepted and choose to attend. So it depends on your colleges...
