Can someone please explain UK admssions for a student from the US?

Recently, I have been looking into universities in the United Kingdom. Some universities I am interested in are Oxbridge(wouldnt hurt to try), London School Of Economics, Imperial College London, and a few others. I hear that UK universities base admission completely on academic merit. On the universities admission site's, they all mention UCAS, and after visiting the UCAS website, I was left clueless. Can someone please explain the process of admission to the UK from the USA and how hard it is to gain admission?

Any tips would be great!

any help from anyone?

A similar question was asked in the International Students forum

I think a lot of the application dates (i.e. Oxbridge) are earlier in the year--opening in mid-Septemberish, maybe? I think schools in the UK are pretty heavy on interviewing, so if you wanted to attend school there, you might have to arrange for an interview. I know they do interviews in certain cities in North America, but those events might still be far away.

I think it is very difficult for international students to get in, at least at Oxbridge. The international student applications are probably super-competitive, with the creme de la creme from different int'l schools applying at once. I know that schools like Oxbridge keep tight quotas for the number of int'l applicants they can accept each year.
