Can someone please help me with converting my GPA?

Hello!
I’m an international student and in my country we use the 5.0 grading scale, I take 11 classes a week and we use the Baccalaureate learning system. I’m having a hard time figuring this out. I’m currently the 2nd highest gpa in my class, but when I convert my gpa to a 4 point scale one it gives me a 3.4 which from what i’ve read is not very good. I’m trying to look for answers and stuff and I was wondering if anyone here was familiar with this? It’d be of so much help! Thank you very much! I’m not spanish, I’m from a country in latin america and couldn’t find information on our system (bachillerato) but it’s pretty similar with the spanish one here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Spain#Spanish_Baccalaureate_.28Bachillerato.29 Mine is marketing.

Economy 4.5
Business Math 3.8
Spanish Literature 4.1
Marketing and Advertising 4.7
Computer Science 4.8
History 4.6
Geography 4.6
Religion 4.6
Physical Education 4.5
Accounting 4.4
Business English 4.2

Total Gpa: 4.45

First, convert your 5 point grades to a %. Then grade those % on the 4.0 scale below:

http://www.collegeboard.com/html/academicTracker-howtoconvert.html

4.5 = 90 =3.7
3.8= 76= 2.0
4.1= 82- =2.7
4.7= 94 =4.0
4.8= 96 =4.0
4.6= 92= 3.7
4.6= 92= 3.7
4.6 = 92 = 3.7
4.5= 90 = 3.7
4.4= 88 = 3.3
4.2= 84= 3.0

add the new 4.0 scale grades together and divide by 11 = 3.41

you did it right. a solid B avg.

4.5= 95= 4.0
3.8= 88 = 3.3
4.1 = 91 = 3.6
4.7 = 97 = 4.0
4.8 = 98 = 4.0
4.6 = 96 = 4.0
4.6 = 96 = 4.0
4.6 = 96 = 4.0
4.5 = 95 = 4.0
4.4 = 94 = 3.9
4.2 = 92 = 3.7

I did what you said from converting it from 5 scale to % and then that % to 4 scale and that came up, idk if i did it right but i googled and found these charts:
http://www.groton.k12.ct.us/cms/lib2/CT01001200/Centricity/Domain/98/5%20point%20CONVERSION%20CHART%20B.pdf
i converted my grades to the % and then those % to the grades on this chart:
http://inquiry.princetonreview.com/leadgentemplate/GPA_popup.asp

and when i added all the grades together and divided by 11 i came up with 3.8

Did I do it wrong? or was it the charts?

Thank you so much for your help!

Are you asking for college application purposes? Unless a college specifically tells you to convert your GPA (very rare), don’t convert; use the GPA as shown on your transcript.

If a college asks you to convert, it will give you specific instructions on how to convert (e.g. UC schools).

They are just different charts. Some give a higher gpa than others. As skieurope says, there is no real reason to do it. The colleges will do it in their own way(s). You just enter your grades as the appear.

I understand wanting to know just to judge against what others have posted here. But it really is kind of impossible! I read one converter where you simply subtract 1.0 from each grade…If those a good grades in your system, the colleges will also see them as good:). so if a 4.5 would be a high A or “best grade” in your system, your chart is probably right, and mine wrong, bc a 95 would be a very high score.

I just wanted to convert it to just be able to judge myself and see what colleges I actually stand a chance at. I mean a 4.5 is 5 points away from being a 5.0 which is like yeah a 95. So, since it is impossible to convert it then technically which would be my gpa in a 4 scale? like approximately? 3.4 or 3.8? I just want to build a list of colleges I can apply to (I know they charge for applications so I can’t just apply to a lot of colleges thinking I will get accepted to them)

Thank you so much for your help!

here is another calculator from a college website.

Thank you! This one gives me a 3.5 but it’s only for 6 classes?
I’ve always wondered if taking 11 classes would affect me in the whole conversion process? My school is a private prep school and one of the hardest in my country, it has prestige, but I’m not sure if colleges care about this at all.

They do QueenE

Thank you!
Wow, I’ve got a huge dilemma now since I can’t convert my gpa exactly to a 4.0 scale (depending on the calculator and stuf it just gives me different results each time)

So, basicaly taking 11 classes does make my application better? I’ve been honor roll and top of my class since 3rd grade in elementary. Never switched schools.

Thank you so so much!

Colleges may have difficulty understanding the grades but your rank and recommendations will help. Is your school well known? Have other students gone to U.S. colleges? If so, your guidance counselor or dean will know how to explain the grading differences to colleges.
By the way, how many students are there in your graduating class?

There’s 300-360 students in my graduating class but the ranks are given by major. My school is the second oldest school in the country and the first private one founded. It has a lot of prestige and it’s the school were banks go to to search for potential workers and offer internships and all that. A lot of students in my school are offered full tuition scholarships in the US, most of my cousins studied here and have entered Colleges in Florida. I’ve heard of alumni making it to the ivies. One guy went to harvard, I think and gave us the testimony. I’m not sure if they’ve heard of it in the US, since my country is rather small and well, in Latin America.
Thank you!

I’m sure you’ll be fine then. 2/300 is quite impressive especially when the school is prestigious.

It’s ranked by bachillerato (it’s like majors and we usually call it that at my school so yeah, mine’s marketing), so there’s 80 in my major, 40 in my class. It’s a pretty complicated system, I had a hard time figuring it out when I first got into hs (it was different in elementary) basically in my class I’m 2, in my major I’m 4. Not sure about final ranking with the 300, from what I’ve seen they only post by majors, I’d need to ask the counselor personally to figure this out. High School starts in 7th grade at my school, I used to have a 4.2 when I first started, then went on to a 4.3 on the following, then again to 4.3 last year and now I’m currently on a 4.4 this trimester, I plan to get 4.5 on the following two trimesters I have left to accomplish a 4.5 total this year since well colleges look at the 9th-12th grades and not the others so yeah!

Thank you!

Also, another question, I’ve heard about URM and does me being asian and being born and raised in latin america help with this? Are stakes higher for me?

Will you indicate asian or latino? Seems you are asian by heritage and latino by nationality.

My family is Chinese, they immigrated from China to Latin America. I’ll be the first in my family to go to College, my sibling will be next and that’d be it. I was born and raised in Latin America and basically I’ve lived here my whole life.

Would that help with URM or will the stakes be higher since I’m asian? I’ve heard about the former and I’m not sure if it’d apply for me?

URM as a hook only applies to domestic applicants.

I didn’t know that, but thank you for telling me!
