Can submitting an art portfolio detrimental?

I want to submit some artworks on a CD to the schools I am applying to (particularly Princeton, Columbia, Amherst, uChicago etc). I have no doubt that some of my art pieces are very strong, but the minimum amount is 10 art pieces (for Princeton).

By the time of my application, I would have only completed about 10-12 pieces and hence I will have very little room for selection. All the art pieces will be from my Junior year to the first 2 months of Senior year.

As you may have figured out, the overall portfolio might not be as strong as I would like it to be, so I am slightly concerned if a O.K. portfolio (with very good individual pieces) will reflect negatively on my application. Should I be?

The portfolio will contain a diverse range of art from paintings to installation to collages to etc etc - will this help?

Also in general, is it worth the effort to make a portfolio? Does it make you stand out much?

One more thing, I plan to indicate on the form that I want a major in ECON, not art or architecture or anything to do with art. I do plan to put visual arts as a minor or certificate course though. Is this important?
