I read on a diff thread that you can use different letters for different colleges but will teachers be able to see where exactly their letters are being sent to?
As a teacher who writes endless recommendations, I must admit I’m curious as to why this would be a bad thing. If I’m writing the letter recommending you, why shouldn’t I know who the letter is going to?
As to the answer, it varies widely from school to school. To be honest, a year ago I wrote 40 letters. (nope, not duplicates, 40 different kids.) I don’t have the time or energy to go onto Naviance and see where each of those 40 letters went-- I have this year’s kids to concern myself with, as well as my own 3, my home, and the prep I have to start this week for next year. I could find out if I wanted to, but can’t imagine spending the time doing so.
But every year I get a letter or two from colleges thanking me for recommending so-and-so.
Again, I’m very curious as to why you would care?
I think it would be courteous to inform the teachers you are asking to recommend you where you are applying. You ask certain teachers because you believe there is mutual respect and that the teacher will recommend you with a positive light.
I was just curious because I have three teachers I’m asking and I don’t want to accidently offend them by not using their recommendation for certain colleges. It was really just a thought that randomly occurred. Thank you so much for your answers!
