can the things we post on the website be used against us, admissions officers?

do u go to this website and write down specific details about people here?

like, if i were to apply to your school, would you be able to match up the information from my chances thread to my application, and then be able to figure out some of the other schools that i wish to apply for? do you bother to do that?

please be honest. it's only fair to be honest.

would posting specific information on CC in some cases lower our chances for admission?

would you scope out our characters / personalities / hidden motives on this website and use it in determining admission?

CAN ANYTHING posted on this website be used against us?

has anyone in the past been rejected from college because of information found on this site? like, say i were to apply to princeton and harvard and oberlin. i said that princeton was my number one choice, and oberlin was near the middle section of my list. oberlin went onto this website, found out that i was applying to princeton, and then decided to reject me, knowinh that oberlin wasn't my #1 choice. Has that happened before?

i feel that this is a wonderful anonymous website that can be a source of information when you have no one else to turn to. i will feel very violated if this website, intended to be anonymous, is used against us in the admissions game.

On the other hand, has anyone ever been *advantaged *because of information on collegeconfidential?

does anyone else but me have thoughts on this?

Of course depending on what you post, things used on this website could be used against you. I have seen students who posted about crimes they had committed, habitual patterns of cheating, and plans to do things like back out of ED because of getting into a school they perceived as better.

Often people have posted enough info here to be identifiable. For instance, I remember a guy who said that he had applied ED to a college to boost the chances for his his fraternal twin, and the OP planned to back out of ED. The OP had posted his hometown and the college he had applied ED to. I am sure that there were not those many fraternal twins who had applied ED to that small college, so there probably was an excellent chance that someone from the college or the guy's high school figured out what was going on.

It is unlikely that anyone is going to post that they didn't get into a college due to something posted on this website. After all, how would they know why they were rejected? The college isn't going to tell them.

There are absolutely no websites in which one can be sure of remaining completely anonymous. Never put anything on the Internet -- a website, a blog, e-mail -- that could come back to haunt you.

what about things that are of the norm? i know that everyone here posts things on the chances thread, without any criminal activities, and without cheating intents / bad intents such as the ED thing.

will those people face consequences?

will colleges also consider threads that were like a year old? i mean, you've changed then. what if oberlin becomes your #1 choice within one year, and you decide that princeton isn't for you? what if oberlin digs up my old thread (which doesn't exist, this is purely hypothetical) and assumes that i still am not particularly interested in oberlin?

colleges can't just assume things from what you post online, especially when THINGS change, and you don't record your changing opinions every time you log online.

u know, this means i might as well tell everyone to stop with their chances thread. the reason why i like collegeconfidential so much is that you can learn about the college application process and where you stand, but when you feel that you can be penalized for the stuff you put on collegeconfidential, you just feel ill at ease and as if you can't use this website to the full extent that you wish to.

I think you're thinking about this way too much. The admissions officers know that you're top pick school could change, and they won't hold that against you. (They have better things to do.) At the same time, I do know that admissions officers visit this site so don't say something on here that you wouldn't say to a teacher or your parents. (i.e. Don't brag about how you lie, cheat, etc. That information might raise eyebrows if they have enough personal information to identify you.)

That's why you don't make worthless chances threads that don't mean anything. The responses you receive could be completely off.
That's also why you don't make yourself obviously identifiable.

Common sense should prevail, but several people are clearly lacking...

And I highly doubt you'll get an answer to your question- how would they know why they were rejected?

Too much paranoia here. The admissions officers have ENOUGH material to sift through. Unless they're employing some web spider (think NSC) that is designed to pick up "cheat" or something (which I'm sure they are NOT), the 10-15 minutes they spend with your file will not be invaded by a laundry list of web hits by someone who MIGHT be you.

im waiting for some responses, adcoms.
