So here's my story: In the summer after I graduated from 8th grade, I volunteered as a Junior Counselor at my local Boys & Girls Club for their summer camp program. I volunteered my time from 7AM-6PM/5 days a week/7-9 weeks.

My issues/problems:

I know colleges want to see your ECs, volunteer hours, etc. from your HS career, but technically that was my summer going INTO freshmen year ... so it can count under my volunteer hours, right?

So when I calculated my total hours from that summer it came out to be 400+ ... O_o Would colleges suspect that I may be lying? I don't blame them for thinking that it's hard to imagine since it's a HEFTY chunk of hours for just ONE summer, but it's true.

Speaking of the Boys and Girls club ... Would this (volunteering)^ sound like a good essay topic? Here's a little more background info:

I attended the Boys &Girls Club since I was in second grade up to my freshmen year of HS. It was a huge part of my childhood. Growing up as an only child with hard-working, blue collar parents it was hard for them to find a place for me to go afterschool. They worked 10-12 hours a day for 6 days a week and I wasn't allowed to be home all by myself. Afterall, I was only so young ... Since my parents worked all the time, arranging rides to pick me up afterschool was ALWAYS the issue. The BGC really served its purpose for me. I've been there so long that I've seen the old building destroyed and reconstructed. The old counselors still remember me this present day since I was a little tyke ^_^ Once I became old enough, I decided to volunteer as a Junior Counselor. It's funny because I was once a kid attending there being babysat by the counselors, and now (or more like during freshmen year) I was the one watching the kids.

If I write about this essay, some good will come out of it because it'll explain my huge amount of volunteer hours during that summer. It'll also show a personal side of myself of when I was a child. However, what does this essay really show about me though? How can this essay show the admission officers what I could contribute to the University? My majors I'm considering are not in the social work/education/childcare department at all. I'm more leaning towards the biology/medical/pharmaceutical route. This essay topic obviously does not show that about my favored majors so ... This is a problem. Do I change my topic, or what? I can't think of any other ideas ):

Help? D:

Oh, and Bonus Question: Can a Junior Counselor be considered a leadership role? I never thought about this until now ...

BTW: I'm a rising senior now ... If that matters at all ...
